I would really go with the +def -spd, that's pretty much the perfect IV combo for Enemy Phase armor units. Especially if you want to use Vengeful Fighter/Quick Riposte seal. Maybe even give him Aether for some long term sustain.
See, getting doubled for armor units is usually a GOOD thing, because their stats are so high, they can usually shrug off a couple extra points of damage, but it helps proc their high charge sustain skills much faster i.e. Aether. And then their skills help the armor unit hit back twice and usually secure the kill.
There are exceptions to this, obviously you don't want a low res armor unit taking a lot of hits from a speedy mage when at a color disadvantage, but most of it is manageable especially if you stack Ward Armor buffs.
So, I'd say keep the +def one and merge the + spd one into him. Hope that gives you some ideas.
