Would ignis be overkill on xander?

38 def with a def+1 SS but he can go up to 44 with distant defense in his A slot...and that's not counting a +6 fortify from horse emblem on top of +2 ally support! I'm asking because he has bonfire as his special so just wondering if ignis is even necessary in this situation.
