Why wouldn't you run TA/Gem weapons?

The basic idea is that a lot more often than not, you'll run a disadvantge against the colours that oppose you as it is. People that have told me about TA said that said characters shouldn't be facing those anyway, to which I wonder, how isn't this the obvious choice then? I once did an example with female Robin, that she's simply a lot better of with it than she is with, say, Fury. Fury would only alow her to do a little more damage (which isn't to say much, basically single digits vs. nothing). That thing somewhat goes with a lot of characters though, doesn't it? The only time I can see it justified to *not* run massive Triangle Advantage is when your character deals damage at least into their 50's (example Red mage vs. Camus' low Res).

tl;dr

If TA & Gem weapons allow you heavily amplify the matchups you win, why isn't it the most straightforward choice?

For one....in arena defence having units with gem weapons would make them that much easier to be baited and defeated.

You also have to consider that units with legendary weapons are just plain better and therefore used more so it makes no sense to swap their weapon or them for a gem weapon.

Gem weapons have low might and other than for AA you shouldnt run them since they will actually cost matchups/potential points due to not being legendary.

Whats better than having a fully sid unit that can tank and ko all units of a certain color? A unit that can steam roll through even unfavourable matchups. Ex. Brave axe cherche

Like there is a strategy on here on how to use gem weapons/TA but units have better alternatives.

Cherche is a massive outlier than, and that only really includes units on the squishier side. You also keep mentioning legendaries when only a really small percentage of units actually run legendaries. Of course being able to counter unfavourable matchups would be preferable, but that doesn't mean it'll happen. It only adds to what I said.

So far, I guess the only good reason not to is basically in Arena Defense.

Robin runs TA anyways because you give her GronnRaven to counter both Rein and Lyn anyways.

The reason however you don't run Gem weapons always is because of the implied 'you shouldn't need that to win what you already win' mentality.

The main weapons you run otherwise for non-legendary weapon users is a Killer/Slaying weapon of their type to proc more special triggers and get better on color matchups.

Depending on your character and the meta, Fury provides the added bulk needed to survive important matches, or adds enough power to make Vantage worth while, or setup Desperation easier, etc.

There's a variety of reasons to do this, instead, and in some cases, just any other A skill gets better general results. Deathblow Eliwood can actually kill Reinhardt with his massive attack despite disadvantage for example.

It mostly depends on the character and build really. For desperation users, Fury or L&D just makes more sense to let them shit on anyone they want.

There's also Close/Distant Counter builds which are fun too.

I have however seen someone suggest a team of all 3 color raven mages, each with TA and a suitable breaker skill. They'd not really be that good on Defense (since it makes color baiting even easier due to the TA penalty) but they are in theory a very strong counter offensive team that could potentially deal with many varying threats with ease if build correctly.

I think TA works best on units who have low atk or have little chance of double attacking and need to maximize their initial attack. (Think Nowi, Ephraim, Olivia etc.) Theres no point in using TA on units with high damage output as it is usually overkill and takes away their ability to KO units of the opposite color. (Using TA on Linde might take away her potential to KO other blue mages and some green units).

Ironically, I found myself using L&D a lot more on Sanaki since she deals rather decent damage against a lot of Blues as well ocassionally doubling and killing annoying units like TT Gaggles and Hector.

Then Raven tome happened.

Nice thought. Indeed, a TA red unit will be all that you need to conquer the top tier teams that always double, triple, and even quadruple on greens to achieve perfect scores. Even for a more general case, having a TA team will help you ease through the arena for most of the time. However, it doesn't mean that TA builds work best on every unit.

This is because if you have a strong red unit, for example, you expect it to take care of all greens anyway. In other words, TA on strong units in their respective colors can be largely a matter of overkill. Therefore, TA or gem weapons are usually on weaker units that don't usually have their legendary weapons or just lack offensive power such as the dancers. TA also works well on raven tome users since it helps take care of two "colors", making the payoff higher.
