Why were high arenas difficult?

So, everyone kept saying that they had a hard time staying in Arena 18, Arena 19, or whatever. People have presumably been playing longer than me too...

I started in early January, right at the end of the Christmas event, although I sadly didn't get any of the banner heroes because I didn't even realize multiple banners existed for a week. :')

However, since then, I've gone straight from Arena 1 to Arena 19. I've never stayed in an arena for a season, and I've never fallen an arena. Currently, I'm on track to be in Arena 20 this season. I know I was never in high Arena 20 where it was filled with whales, but what about sub-20 arenas?

If you find it hard to get to higher arenas and stay there, why? And if not, feel free to just give some thoughts regardless. Thanks!

EDIT: Just to clarify, I'm mostly F2P. I bought the Black Knight pack, but don't use him and got nothing good from the orbs, and recently bought $14 worth of orbs to try and get Fallen Robin, but with no luck. No good stuff from those orbs either. So I'm not quite fully F2P, but money hasn't significantly impacted my gameplay.

I’m in tier 17-18, but I really don’t care about arena. I just do the daily 3 battles for the quests with my cavalry Team + the bonus unit.

Same. I bounce between 17-19 typically, depending on whether I actually remember to do Arena that week.
I don't really like Arena that much; getting 4-5 battles deep just to get crushed by some random's stupid bs troll team got old months ago.
And I stay far, far away from whaletown USA... I mean, arena assault. Rewards aren't worth the irritation of dealing with Rein/B!Lyn 7 times in a row imo.

Not doing AA is pointless. Winning a single battle and not doing it again each week will still most likely net you 500 feathers and 10 coins/stones. I don’t know very many people who would pass up an extra 26,000 feathers and 520 coins/stones per year. And even if you were able to get a score around 4500, you would probably score in the top 60,000, which would boost your feather total to 1,400 and give 3 extra coins/stones per week. AA is not that hard to be competitive in, especially if you build anti-meta units who will never see use in any of your main teams. It’s where more obscure units like Takumi, NY Corrin, Soren, Leon, and many others truly get their chance to shine. Any unit with 45+ attack and decent bulk can run TA like a pro. Breaker skills can make tier 4 or 5 units destroy tier 1 units. Dragon slayers become a premium in there. Spring Camilla can solo maps.

AA is a world where you can run totally unorthodox teams and destroy your opponents who may have spent a lot of money trying to build the perfect team. I would not in any way call it whaletown USA. I would call it the world of opportunity. Without AA, many units I use would become useless.

The levels below 20 aren't that difficult. The REAL challenge is staying in T20 consistently.

Staying in tier 20 is the hard part, couldn't hold with 4950 score last week. basically its just full of whales and smart FTP players who +10 common units like Donnel.

Firstly, some people aren’t that interested in arena and what tier they are in, they play for different reasons, such as collecting or building units.

Secondly, don’t assume that just because a person is a regular in tier 20 they are whales. Some are just very savvy and spent there feathers well on developing and building +10 units out of common 4* units. I have 4 x 5*+10 units, but only one is 5* exclusive, the others are merge projects built from 4* units.

Finally, getting up the ranks of arena is relatively easy, but staying in tier 20 is much harder. You’ll find out soon enough...

Most people either don’t care or don’t have a strong, synergetic arena team. That’s what causes them to falter. I used to be that way, until I built a dedicated arena team. I have not been lower than T19 since last summer, and I regularly cycle between T19-T20. It would run about 5,000+ arena score just to stay T20, and I’ve hit close to that once. Either the very lucky and dedicated or the very whaley stay in T20. I’m dedicated but not lucky. So I am stuck in 19.5 limbo lol

My best team mostly consists of ranged units with semi-low bst, and I don't even have the luck to supermerge a 4* unit. I usually bounce between 18 and 19, unless I don't have any of the bonus units, which in case I sometimes drop to 17 if I was at 18.
