Why do people whale?

The game and extra content can be beaten with +0 characters, so why the overkill? Also, I imagine when they get a tempest trial unit like Joshua or Black Knight, they would think those characters are weak for only being able to get to +1

I can think of a couple reasons.

1. People love decking out their favorite Fire Emblem characters. This includes making a +10 merge of them to completely max out their potential.

2. Merges carry more arena weight, and will possibly net you more rewards each week. Now that IS has tossed Sacred Coins and Refining Stones into the weekly arena rewards, I know I'll start making high-level merges.

GHB units or Tempest Trial reward units might not see whale-tier play due to being low-merged, but that doesn't mean they aren't powerful or useful. In fact, Black Knight is in limited quantity, but remains one of the most powerful armor units in the game.

But as Mr.Lightning said it, having a +10 character isn't necessary to clear the PvE content, so it's just overkill.
Indeed it increases the Arena weight, so you can get the maximum rewards which is ultimately just 1k feather more than the very accessible 19th rank. And regardless of the rewards, once you have a +10 unit (often a 5* exclusive) it's quite hard to justify the use of your feathers for something else than SI.

The 5* exclusives are often better units than lower rarity ones.

I know it isn't necessary nor is it an optimal use of feathers/orbs, he simply asked why people do it.

Also, great +10 merges don't always come from 5-star exclusives. There are great 4-star candidates that can be made into high merges like Cherche, Lukas, Reinhardt (doesn't carry high arena weight, but is frightening in its own right), and more.

its mostly because it feeds off of people's obsessive gambling tendencies i guess

you win once and you think you'd get lucky again so you keep trying

Why do people buy a 100k car vs a 30k one?
Why do people buy 500 horsepower car vs a 250 one when they live in high traffic areas anyways?
Why do people spend 2k on a purse when a 100 one does exactly the same thing?
Why do people go to the movies when you can wait to watch it for free in a few days or weeks?

It all just comes down to personal preference. You do not need to be at max inherit to play this game, but some people do it because they like to hit the max.

I do so on certain heroes because they are my favorites and I like to see their full potential. Yes it is a waste of money, but so is like 90% of the things we do in life.

It is basically whatever the preference is with their disposable income.

Why build a +10 team at all? I know a few on the board are building them at the minute like myself (mainly using 4* star units and feathering them up for merge levels). A lot of it comes down to wanting to compete at the very top tier and prove yourself in that arena.

There will be guys who have huge amounts of disposable income for whatever reason who will do it just for fun.
There will be those that want to compete at the very top and to do that they need top tier units with top stats.
There are those that are collectors and want to catch them all.
There are those that will only whale for there favourite characters and then never again.

There are lots of reasons people might whale. Ultimately I think that anyone who complains about it should stop and think about the bigger picture. Those people spending thousands on this game are funding it for the rest who don’t. So don’t complain about whales because they are what makes this game profitable and profit is what’s providing the rest of us with consistent new content.
