Who to 5* (40k Feathers)?

I've been wrestling with a few options on how to spend the 40k or so feathers I've accrued and figured I can find some good thoughts here. I won't list out all of my units; but here are the ones currently in heavy rotation:

Swords (5*) - Ryoma, Eirika, Ike, Chrom+1, Olivia (4*, WOM)

Lances (5*) - Azura+1, Sharena, F. Corrin

Axes (5*) - Hector

Mages (5*) - Julia, Tharja, Reinhardt,

Archers (5*) - Klein

Here are the options I'm weighing for leveling up:
Alfonse, Xander, Effie (4*+1, +Atk/-Spd), Camus, Anna, Sheena (+HP/-Spd or +Res/-Def), Michaelis, Zephiel, Cecilia (-HP/+Res or neutral), Nino (3* +spd/-res, also a regrettable bad IV 4* merge from before I knew better that could be Cecilia Gronnblade fodder).

I should note that I'm mostly F2P, although I did splurge and spend $40 on the Hero Fest banner. I have some other 5*s and 4*s with bad IVs if there is key inheritance fodder that would impact someone's thoughts.

Xander, Camus, Effie and Nino are definitely the heroes you should prioritize on upgrading first.

Xander is a more mobile and more defensive version of Ryoma, which can help if you need a bulky Horse Emblem swordsman. His attack is solid and his defense is very good, but his speed will cause Xander to be doubled constantly, so watch for speedy mages that can one-round-KO him. For skills, absolutely give him Quick Riposte so then he can double units attacking him. Attack +3 is to help preserve Quick Riposte, but if you're feeling reckless, Fury is the better skill choice. Bonfire is the optimal special, but Ignis can also work if you have the Quickened Pulse seal

Camus has very well-balanced stats along with Distant Counter built into his lance. His versatile stats can opt for a Fury + Vantage set with Hone Cavalry or an Attack +3 Quick Riposte set for general usage. Bonfire, Ignis, Luna, Draconic Aura or Moonbow should be his chosen specials

Effie can almost one shot all reds in the entire game, due to having the absolute best attack base in the game along with Death Blow and Wary Fighter increasing her offense and durability. Effie's high BST also helps in arena scoring and her base skills are all very good together, so Effie is a great unit without inheritance. Optimal specials should be Draconic Aura or Bonfire

Finally, Nino is a green glass cannon that may need inheritance. Her base skills aren't great for her offensive playstyle, so you're going to require to sacrifice a unit for a special like Moonbow in order to bump up Nino's offense. Stat-wise, Nino is basically a green Linde. Lots of speed, high attack and decent resistance, but horrible defense and HP. Having buffers like Ephraim, Eirika or Ryoma with Fortify Res sacred seal pushes Nino to extreme amounts of power.

All in all, just pick what unit helps your team the best. You already have Reinhardt and Cecilia, so upgrading Xander and Camus can help so then you can build a powerful Horse Emblem team. Hope my comment helped!

Thanks very much for the thoughtful response! I was leaning towards Camus and Xander and think you've put me over the top on that. The next 40k after this can go towards 5* Cecilia and giving her Gronnblade.

My good Nino is sorely tempting; but hard to justify when I have another extremely strong green mage in Julia. Effie is a tough to pass on as well; but my typical arena team is Julia/Ryoma/Azura/Bonus unit, so I struggle to find a way to properly slot her.

If you want a horse team you'll need Camus and probably Xander.

Effie can be played both in an armor emblem team AND as a standalone unit (with decent support from team members for mobility), so maybe you should consider her first if horse emblem is not your priority.

Nino will be a jewel if you pair her up with that Eirika I saw in your 5*, but I also saw you had a nice Julia so maybe she won't be that useful for you.

Anna is very funny to play due to Noatun but she is a highly risky unit.

I wouldn't go with Alfonse unless you really lack a red lord (which doesn't seem to be the case, plus you already have a Chrom, who is a better version of Alfonse IMHO)

I see you also are struggling with those greens ... But I'm not sure Michalis is a great unit. Plus you have several other options at the moment ^^

Thank you. Yes, I'm a little light on green units. I do have a 4* Fae, with perfect IVs (+atk / -def), 4* Titania (-atk, I'm assuming she's basically unusable), Legion, and 3* Frederick (mediocre -HP / +res IV). Fae seems like the only one of those who could justify an investment; but she'd need 40k feathers to inherit lightning breath to be really useful. I got lucky pulling my Hector and Julia fairly early and have mostly shied-away from pulling on green since then. I did fodder a few other Frederick's without carefully checking IVs, which is unfortunate, although I think I'd still rather run Blade Cecilia as the green unit in a cavalry comp anyway.

With Effie, I was thinking about trying to just do a 4* merge with her over time, since she is relatively common. Do you think it's better to 5* her than to wait on a couple more 4*s for a merge?

I never pulled even one of them in like 400 total pulls !
If you happen to have a decent IV Effie I see no reason to not 5* her :)

She is a living terror, if you like playing armor emblem.

I'm also pretty jealous of your fae. I've been waiting for one for ages ^^
