Steady Breath increases defense and is more readily available compared to its Resistant counterpart. V!Ike is only available through B8% banners whereas B!Ike can be obtained through the regular summoning pool AND has been the focus unit on multiple banners.

Also, from what I've been hearing, mages aren't really that "common" in Arena compared to units that hit you with physical attacks, so it's more common to go with defense.

This is pretty much 100% accurate. I'm just going to add a few other thoughts though. A key thing is that you're going to be taking physical damage a lot more often in the Arena as compared to magic. I'm pretty sure there are more physical damage-dealing units in the game, especially because of the vast ranks of Sword heroes.

Additionally, Mages don't score as high in the Arena, because of their lower total stats, so at high-tier arenas, you aren't as likely to see mages. There's only three armored mages, and there's not many others with high enough stat total to rank well up top. Warding Breath would work against staves, except essentially every Stave user in the arena runs Dazzling Staff or the Dazzling refinement. You get the special charge, but it's not as good because you can't counterattack.

That leaves Warding Breath as essentially just being strong against Dragons. Which is a very small group.

Also, in order to get value out of the mage killing, the unit usually wants to have some sort of built-in Distant Counter weapon, in order to take advantage of the ranged taking abilities. This drastically reduces the pool, to only a few DC-weapon units like Hardin, Dorcas, and then Dragonstone users like Nowi, who can use Lightning Breath+.

Steady Breath can essentially be slapped on anything.

They aren't that different, the main feature about breath skills is that they accelerate special cooldown and the 4 added res or def is just an extra that can always be usefull.
I would choose one over the other depending on how i want to build the unit:
- for mixed tanks that have distant counter in the weapon i'll give the breath that boosts the weaker defensive stat
- for phisical dedicated tanks steady breath will work better, and the same applies to warding breath for dedicated magic tank

I think the reason for steady breath being much more common is the fact that B!Ike did appear as a focus unit in many banner (he did also appear in a hero fest) and he's also present in the normal summoning poll, while L!Ike can be summoned only in the legendary banner and people may want to use the free one since he is a very strong character

Part of this is because Steady Breath has been around a little longer and is arguably more readily available than Warding Breath since Brave Ike has been around a few times.

The choice of skills if you have both depends on the unit and its intended role. For mixed tanks, take the skill that shores up your weak point. For magic or physical only tanks, go with the associated attribute, likewise if you choose to run a stat-based special (Ignis, etc).

Steady Breath is easier to come by, since Warding is only available on a Legendary unit. Plus at higher arena tiers, mages tend to vanish(due to them having lower scores) That means that the magical enemies you'll end up facing most often will be Dragons. Even then, you'll face Armors far more frequently, and there are only 3 armor spellcasters(one for each color) and 1 armored dragon(who, let's face it, Warding Breath will probably not save you from)
