I read articles online comparing loot crates (and gachapon) with online gambling and think about IS is targeting the reward centers of my brain, how I'm being manipulated for profit.

Then I remind myself that in three months the stuff that's available now will be so powercrept to the point where I won't care about missing them.

Remember how I use alts a lot less often. Tell myself everything will be rerun on a legendary banner where I can get more for less. Have a reason to save. If you don't have a reason to save, then I don't find much wrong with spending your orbs often.

1. Learn about average orb costs for banners. Sniping red on a 4 hero focus with no color sharing is almost 2x more orbs per focus than sniping green on a 3hero banner. Legendary banners are even better if you want all 3 focus from a color.
Knowing I'm getting a horrible deal for my orbs deters me from summonning.
Another factor with those average orb costs is knowing how many orbs i must save to expect to get a focus unit. There is no point in spending 20 orbs on this banner - I must be extremely lucky to get the focus in less than 100 orbs.

2. EXTREMELY IMPORTANT - Set your goals and stick to them. Ask yourself what do you want in this game.

You want to get to tier 21 in arena? Save your orbs for armored legendaries and don't summon on their banners if you don't like the other focus units. The legendary will reapear later, you can summon them

You want to build a flier team? Maybie you'll need to plan to have enough orbs to get a NY! Azura when she comes back at the beggining of 2019 on her rerun.

You're a fan of F!Corrin like a friend of mine and hope she becomes the next red water legendary hero? Save your orbs for her then.

Know that those goals are moslty mutually exclusive - you cannot have everything.

3. When your summon finger aches, remind yourself of your goals. Do you really need this new unit? Wouldn't you prefer [that thing in your goal] Which is more important?

Lots and lots of patience.

Good luck!

Step 1: Set a goal. Say you want more Y!Tikis, or are waiting for a new character to be introduced, or you want a character with a certain statline or skill to be introduced.

Step 2: Don't accept orbs that are given as presents for login bonuses etc. Also, try not to spend quest orbs that go straight into your total. Using them a little is alright, but try to keep them high

I was expecting to type more steps, but that's really it. It gets much easier to save once you hit a landmark of saved orbs, when I see that 99 on my present list my resolve strengthens.

I've never tried not accepting them. Is there a max number that can be waiting in your mail before you start losing them because you're not picking them up?

Make sure you keep enough other interesting stuff going in your life. FEH gets pretty slow sometimes. It's pretty slow right now for me because I'm waiting for update 3.0 or whenever the next major things release.

Also, what others said - set your goals, do your homework to know how many orbs you should expect to spend for the units you want, pick good deals for your orbs. I can help you with the numbers if you want. Then look forward to seeing your goals met.

Honestly the best advice is to get past 100 orbs and the temptation goes away the more orbs you have

Strangely true. Same with feathers, and pretty much any other resource. I have a stockpile of many resources (Except Feathers because I finally blew them to nearly finish off three merge projects) simply because I don't wish to spend them anymore.

1. To save orbs, you have to constantly motivate yourself to save orbs. If you press that summon button with the temptation to yolo summon, chances are you're gonna waste all of your orbs in the process. Before you do summon, keep these ideas in mind: First, when does the banner end? Second, do I really want these units, or am I just gonna end up benching them? Third, do I have a synergistic team comp to make them effective? If you can't think these things through, don't expect to save orbs at all.

2. Assuming you got past step 1, make a goal for yourself (Ex. consider what you unit you really want).

3. This is *IMPORTANT*. Do. all. of. the. game's. content! It may not seem like it, but players are able to get about 300 orbs a month ONLY if they complete the game's content. This includes quests, story, paralogues, CC, rival domains/relay defenses, squad assault, arena, etc.

4. Great, now that you are playing all of the game's content, it's time that you kept track of your orb intake. The way I do this is through an app called "HabitBull", where I type out the total amount of orbs I own for each day that I saved. You would be surprised to see how many orbs you can save up in a short amount of time!

5. Happy saving!

P.S. I learned to save orbs the hard way. While summoning on the Land's Bounty banner, I free summoned a H!Mia (favorite character btw) with a -atk IV. So I decided to spend the rest of my 200 or so orbs that I had intended to save for OG Mia for merges to get a H!Mia with better IVs. Next thing I knew, all of my orbs have been drained and my pity rate was at 4.5% with no H!Mia. The next day, OG Mia shows up in a TT banner, so you can imagine that I was pretty salty that I wasted orbs from greed and poor judgement. Luckily for us (and me), we can get 100+ orbs in the next week or so ONLY if you do the game's content.

Thanks for reading, hopefully it helped and wasn't too over-the-top! :)
