A throwup between 7 and 8
I just like the GBH style. It's a fairly simple but great system

7:
Amazing plot (with great protags), challanging gameplay that's still simple enough, first FE game.

8:
Great characters (Both main and side), most replayable game, casual.

The only games I have not played are the original versions of 1, 2 and 3. Plus 5 (Thracia)

Awakening is pretty replayble too. The system of being able to pick your promotion is quite fun.
But I've explained below my problems with awakening. I still really like the game though.
I even like 2/3 of Fates (Revelations is thrash though)

I agree. But I actually like Revelation more than Birthright. Dunno why I dislike Birthright and part of Conquest (how nobody hates Corrin after he borderlines kills everything XD)

Report

The only thing I like about Revelation is the fact that not everyone dies there, so I like to think it as the cannon ending (sorry Scarlet)

I just hate it because it's so damn irritating to play through. The map design is horrible and all the gimmicks to 'cover' that up...

Conquest is probably my favorite part. Difficult but fair.

Conquest is the most different FE game in my opinion besides SoV. It feels very experimental. Its also not that boring. Revelations is Eh for me. As someone who has watched shows like Gundam, i don't mind characters dying if its realistic, makes sense, and are actually characters we get to know. We didn't get to know many characters for who they were in every path in regards to characters who die. I think the only exception being Elise and Xander as we did have a chance to get to know them somewhat. Especially Elise, so her death was good. Especially as we learn that essentially she was the person the people of Nohr followed. Not Garon.

Speaking of, I also really liked Ryoma's death in birthright.

He gives himself up to spare Corrin either the pain of killing him or getting punished.
And it's not like it purely for Corrin, because he knows that if Garon kills Corrin, all hope for Hoshido and the still living members of the royal family is lost.

I'm a sucker for happy endings, but I can appreciate deaths done well.

Crud forgot to say my own! Well... Mine is a 3 way tie between sacred stones path of radiance and awakening.
My first experience with FE was a friend's copy of Sacred stones so there is serious nostalgia for me. Path of Radiance I don't have nostalgia for but i absolutely loved the story and many of the characters as well as their designs which were very different in a good way as they weren't mirrored like many other FE games with the character pictures and animations. As for Awakening, many of the character supports were absolutely phenomenal and while the story wasn't the best, the game was addictive and fun as hell

Report

I did think Awakenings story started off great. The Valm part is somewhat lesser. It felt like filler, even though I like Walhart.
And Validar is a worthless villain.

The biggest problem with awakening for me is how easy the game is to break. Second seals and child units are extremely overpowered. As are pairups.
But if you avoid grinding it accually gets too difficult at times. The balance isn't that great (which is something Fates fixed)

Fates is my favourite, love the fact that I can use Xander and Ryoma to carry the whole team when I’m on a map with disgusting enemies. Charlotte/Kiragi/Midori/Mozu were gods. Especially Mozu/Kiragi as Kinshi Knights, Midori as a Ninja and Charlotte as a Berserker (With Awakening, Death Blow, Gamble and Great Club). Xanders supports were amazing. The OST is simply beautiful, always come back and listen to it.

So... Unpopular opinion that only i seem to hold, i thought Fates' music was relatively weak and i personally didn't like it. I dunno why. Also didn't like some of the units you mentioned while everyone else seems to like them. Wonder why i don't like these things?

Awakening. Genealogy is right behind but Awakening's story (it's pretty good given the previous lore) and it's gameplay (simple and effective) make it easy to pick up and easy to love.

That and, even if some people say the supports are a detriment (they are for some characters) they tend to be boons since they normally expand on a characters personality or the context behind the way they are. Which leads to some great supports.

Report

It is most people's first FE. Honestly if it wasn't for my experience with sacred stones and the rabbit hole of the einerjar, i may not have given the older games a try. Unfortunately Awakening raised my expectations too much and then Fates ended up disappointing me.

Report

I can agree. Birthright was meh to me, and Conquest had good potential but everyone loving Corrin after he ransacked Hoshido kinda put the story of loss and being evil for good on hold since Corrin didn't do jack.

But yeah ditto. I feel you.

Report

I think Fates was too ambitious as well as the problem with the 2 separate teams working on it and how 1 wanted to improve on everything in awakening, and the other... Well they created skinship so ya can tell where this is going lol. That and the horrid localization as well as hit and miss voice acting

Report

My overall favorite is Shadows of Valentina. Great sountrack, voice acting, character designs and personalities (for the most part), and story. I enjoy pretty much everything about it, and its gameplay didn't really bother me too much when it did everything else so well.

In terms of gameplay, I'd have to say Fates: Conquest. That game has a lot of pretty cool maps with diverse objectives. It also has a lot of my favorite maps like the port map with Takumi and the one against Iago near the end of the game.

Report

While not my favorite, I do think the art, writing and especially voiceacting is the best in Echoes.

Every character just oozes charm. Mae, Lukas, Gray, Clair, Berkut. Just to name a few, but they're all great.

Report

Man, that game's cast is so great. I feel that the smaller cast size with the base conversations and the full voice-acted support really helped flesh them out so much better than a lot of the other characters from other FE games.

I was so attached to everyone in that game by the end. The first play through of the game was magical, and it sucks that you can only experience a new game for your first time once. T.T

Report

Yeah, that's probably the problem with fates: too much characters.
And the fact that they tried pushing supports with all same faction + at least 2 differend faction characters.

Echoes might not have quantity, but it does have quality.

My first game was awakening then fates, afterwards I played Fe7, New mystery, Shadows of valentia, Fe4(Still playing), Fe6(Still playing), in that order. Always wanted to play the Telius games.
My fave tho would have to be awakening or Fe7.
Fe 4 and 6 may change my mind when I finish them. And after I beat Fe4 I'm playing Fe5.

So far, I've played all continents except Jugdral. Path of Radiance is hands down my favourite (followed closely by Radiant Dawn and Awakening).

Report

Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn. Ike and Micaiah are my favorite Lords, they have the best beast units in my opinion,as they are part of the story and not just there for whatever reason,I enjoy the way it shuffles around between groups of characters, and the magic in that game is awesome to look at!

Awakening.

While I have some issues with the gameplay, and I think Fates improved in those ways, I had more issues with Fates's story. Like how even though there are three paths, none of them is completely satisfying in their own right. There's no single path where you can collect all possible characters, which is what I would have wanted. There's not even a single path where all characters survive, and characters surviving is kind of a big thing for me. Every ending in Fates is to some degree, at best, bittersweet, and I'm not into that. Awakening is more reliable and fulfilling to me, and I like the characters better overall. I certainly enjoyed Fates, and I think what they did with the story unfolding over multiple iterations of the same timeline was really interesting, but it just wasn't as satisfying an experience as it could have been.
