Veteran badges: potential way to update old units

I've thought of a thing IS can do to help units out who are falling behind due to newer units having higher and often better distributed BST. I've called them veteran badges because they will be restricted to the units who are veterans in FEH, but of course other names are possible.

It's applied like a blessing - overlaps with everything. Like, you know that old Windows Defender logo with the four colours? We would be able to see the badge next to where blessings show up, with the colours showing which stats the badge grants.

It grants 4 stat points, and there are several potential ways to handle the restrictions on how those stat points can be distributed. 1 to all stats wouldn't be very popular and probably wouldn't help enough anyways. 2-1-1 distributions should definitely be allowed (2 to one stat, 1 to two others), and 2-2 and 3-1 distributions might be allowable, perhaps with some restrictions on which two stats those are (ex: 2 atk 2 spd might be acceptable on some units but not on others).

They would be obtainable in very small quantities, maybe one every two or three months. The idea is to allow players to use their favourite characters even if it's some gen 1 unit that's been powercreeped stat for stat.

I've thought of two possible ways to make them obtainable:
- fully formed: and there are two possibilities within this vein.
- by choice: by clearing ___ challenge, obtain a new in-game resource which can be redeemed at the veteran badge shop for a range of different badges (ex: one might give 2 spd 2 res; another might give 1 atk 1 spd 2 def, etc. but they are all preset)
- without choice: by clearing ___ challenge, obtain a badge that grants 2 atk, 1 spd, and 1 def. Usable only by a certain set of characters even within gen 1 units (just like some accessories cannot be worn by certain characters).
- in fragments: by clearing ___ challenge, obtain an atk ore or a spd ore or etc. which can be used in the veteran badge forge along with ancient dew (new in-game resource) to create a badge with your desired stats within the restrictions (ex: 4 atk ores will not form a badge to grant +4 atk). Ancient dew will be limited so that players can only forge one badge every 2-3 months (as explained above), but ores will be more abundant to give players some freedom of what kinds of stats they want on their badges, just as it would be if badges were preset for us but we still got to choose each one.

Note that HP is never offered because gen 1 units already tend to have more HP than their newer counterparts.

Since they are so rare, I think let's make them detachable from any hero that equips them so that another hero can use them, provided that other hero is also capable of wearing that badge.

Thoughts on viability of this feature and potential improvements to my initial suggestion?

Maybe not entirely surprising. The difference between gen 1 and gen 2 BST is 4-5 points so it's perfectly reasonable if some others have also thought that older units could be updated with a few stat points.

My way was just a balance patch where they passively change the BST to older units. Like without anything having to be done they just add on +2 spd +2 Atk to Abel or something along those lines. I guess this can be a more fun way of doing it though.

I like this. Did I miss how you qualify a veteran? Does it start with the original day 1 released characters, or a handful picked each month like weapon refinery?

This is an excellent idea for submission. Welcome back Ryoma and Lucina

I should clarify with initial release, yes, but THEN IS adds the next batch every month or so to keep up, so Klein (loved his character when he first came out) could also join the ranks well before others who hadn’t come out yet

The key is not in the word "veteran" but in IS figuring out which characters need what to make the game more interesting. Some older characters (ex: Nino) might not get anything, while others who arrived after them might get updates sooner.

This really needs to happen, but it won't. Powercreep lures people into buying orbs, so this would be bad for business.

Still, it's a great and fun way to implement a method for players to use more units.
