Top Villains!

As an answer to a comment from yesterday I was too sleepy to notice (Sir o Coffee I completely ghosted you there XD)

*Spoilers*

1 or 2.Lyon: Ignoring Sacred Stones gameplay which can be relatively easy, the story is quiet good. This is further bolstered by what I think is the best antagonist in the series beside Arvis who is likely tied with Lyon. His personality is that of a shy cat (similar to Olivia) but with more reason to be so. He's surrounded by people of grand worth, and incredible strength and mental fortitude and so he develops this shell. ANd then when given the chance to give his life (and subsequent ) soul to save the world at the cost of a few lives, he all but deems it neccessary. Maybe it was unconscious, but he did want it (IE where did I go wrong )he wanted to be as strong as Ephraim, to be as kind as Eirika and have his love for her returned, and he wanted to be as grand as king as his father.
The way they built his character up with flashbacks prior to physically meeting him with Ephraim made it feel all the more agonizing to see how he had truly faked the control, made it seem legitemate only to try and win, to stop a mass genocide via natural disaster. And that characterization and the way they made him feel so alive is one of the reasons he's tied for first

1 or 2.Arvis: Arvis, the mater planner who probably never lost anything in his life before Julius. His meticulous planning and tactical mind to me make his dream all the more a reality. A dream of a world with no war, where he would rule without conflict. A grand dream in itself, but opposed to other believers in the dream he could see that with enemies or rivals it would come down to only moments of peace and so he took the first step into a war for intended peace. His character reminds me alot of Lelouch (Code Geass if you haven't seen it) but this one does it slightly better.

3: Grima: Though this may seem weird just hear me out. You have a dragon/homunculus thing made from human tissue, a mix of other alchemical proccesses and divine dragon blood either gained from Naga's corpse itself (though Nagi lives so I'm perplexed by that idea), or from Julia's descendants (Genealogy and Archanea/Awakening happen in the same universe). Furthermore, with Valentia and the fact that, from lore itself, Grima seemingly shattered the dragon's table and killed everything in sight including the other earth dragons, he gains this ambiance of truly menacing power with nearly infinite patience and a tactical mind that could potentially rival that of Arvis, having waited for the weakest of the human kings and his perfect successor, his heart. He may not have had the perfect characterization in Awakening, but with Valentia and Heroes adding layers to him, I can't help but find myself enjoying his character more. M!Grima shows how humans adored him but took him for granted, and how humanities personality made him putrid inside. Furthermore F!Grima sees humans as semi-vicarious beasts (if you've heard the song Vicarious you can kinda tell what I mean in more detail). The complexity added makes him feel complete, and potentially better than what I expected.

Bonus Round:
Sephiran and Zelgius
Both of these bois almost made it to the top, but I can't help but feel that Zelgius could have had some better characterization. A reason to kill Greil other than just why not, and a few other discrepancies here and there that don't matter much in the grand scale. And Sephiran, his story is a curious one, losing his powers and watching humanity enter it's always continuous spiral, choosing to try and summon the goddess anew because he seems them spiraling once more. It's a good story, but it lacks the grand dreams and personalities of Arvis and Lyon and the masterful (and finally) complete story for Grima in my opinion.

Do let me know who you like most (or how you disagree) FE antagonists outside of favorite characters are normally the best type of chats in the community cause you can see the spectrum of character preferences.

Could you make a large gap and write spoiler at the top of this? I know there are a few people who are planning on playing the games and didn't get to these games yet.

For villains I think that Peri because everyone hates her without exception. To have that kind of power is truly impressive.

I personally think Anankos is a pretty well written.
A once kind god with a vision of one day becoming mad, and he can't delay or change it no matter how much he wants. So in order to stop himself, he created the song Lost in Thoughts All Alone, a song that is literally him crying and pleading for help for someone to put him down. Thus carving a path for his son and his two feuding families to stop him once and for all, and ultimately bring peace to all.
He's really tragic, but he did it for the good of everyone. In a game with mostly badly written charaters, I think he was a pretty well written villan.

I really wish Fates was redone. I want to love the game, but there's too many flaws. I feel like they tried to make Fates far bigger than what it should of been and is shown in the lack(Lack is definitely the wrong word to use, but I can't quite think of another one that would suit it) of creativity which appears the most in the large majority of the character's personalities.

Report

I don't think Fates needs to be redone because the flaws seem kind of inherent. I understand that most people don't enjoy the story compared to the other games, but I think the problem was a bit more than that. There was too many tropes, characters felt like gimmicks, too much focus on shipping. I think it'd just be better to do other games than go back to it. Like I loved Echoes it was probably my favorite in the series.

Report

They had an original idea that could of soared and instead, like you've mentioned, filled it with unoriginal ideas.

I definitely think that it's extremely too early to remake the game like SoV, but I just wish someone could hit a "Reset" button and just redo the game. The amount of things they could of done with three alternate story lines is enormous. It had so much potential and it just fell flat on its face...

Report

It's really true.
Corrin had the potential to be one of the best lords with their premise and concept, but instead they're just really Gary/Mary Sue. But I do think Warriors slightly fixed them up.
Each path has a good premise, but they're all either too easy, too hard, or too gimmicky. Conquest I think is the most bareable, the challenge it gives is one of the best in the series, but Birthright is too easy and kinda bland, and Revelation is way too gimmicky and the story kinda drags too much.
The characters are way too cliche, but there are some diamonds in the rough. But most of the well written charaters are clustered in the crowd of one note and bland charaters.
Despite these flaws, I still love Fates for many reasons. Bringing me into the series, the OST is one of the best FE soundtracks ever, the gameplay is great, and more. But yeah, I definitely agree that Fates needs a lot of work if it gets a remake in the future.

Report

Well, charaters like Charlotte and Nyx are pretty good. Takumi to an extent is the best Hoshidan Sibling in terms of writing. But yeah, as big a Fates baby I am, I can fully agree that Fates needs some touch ups.

Report

Normally, I'd agree with you on Anankos as a character, but there's this little thing in Fire Emblem called Fire Emblem Ancient Dragon Syndrome. Basically, if you're a high ranking dragon in the FE-verse, it's more likely that your sanity will be inversely proportional to your age. It's been seen plenty of times before in the series. One thing I can appreciate, however, is that Fates actually addresses this issue, though not explicitly.

I love all Sacred Stones "villains". Specialy Selena, Riev and Lyon.
Lyon and Selena are these kind of enemies you dont want to kill (also like Lloyd and Linus in some way). So my top 3 would be:

1. Riev (I love him IDC why)
2. Selena /Lyon
3. Black Fang (Specially Lloyd and Linus)

Report

Little late reaction, but that's fitting.
Gotta agree with Lyon as best, he's not some big great villain. Just someone who broke under the pressure of responsability and emotion.
Sacred Stones has good villains in general.

Zephiel is my second.
Like Lyon he broke mentally, but instead of going 'ends justify the means' Zephiel becomes a nihilist. Helps that he's pretty intimidating and fe7 fleshed him out pretty well.

Third is Berkut.
On paper not a great villain, but the execution was just so great.
UNCLE!

Arvis and Zelgius are pretty great as well.

Report

Yeah Zephiel gets better with FE7 adding more backstory to him. And Berkut is acted out far too well for what he is. The voice acting was on point, far more than any other character thus far IMO.

Report

Something that I also respect about Zephiel is that he chose to do what he did. Sure it was through emotional trauma, but never was he forced by some evil power to do what he did.
Hardin and especially Garon were mere puppets, controlled in doing evil.
Take Garon, wouldn't it be better if he was corrupted by the betrayal of his (too many) wifes and the fact that Nohr is a pretty terrible place to live in and needs war to sustain itself as a nation?

As for Berkut, he's the perfect example of what Echoes is all about. Many things about the story are pretty plain, but the beyond excelent presentation made it in one of the best.
Mae and Lukas remain my favortes of that game.

Report

Berkut is unfortunately one of many victims of Echoes' shiny presentation blinding people to his flaws. I don't necessarily think he's a bad character, per se, but he's pretty much just a "Well done, nephew" Guy. It's nothing particularly new. Admittedly, Ian Sinclair sells his character really well, but that doesn't mean much towards his character as a whole.

Grima isn’t a good villain imo and Lyon isn’t a villain, but more like hero. Arvis is a good villain and so is Sephiran, but I feel Zelgius should be a bit higher. Maybe it’s because Zelgius is my favorite villian lol.
1. Zelgius
2. Arvis
3. Berkut
This is just my shitty opinion that nobody really cares about

Report

As sympathetic as he was, Lyon was still a villain. At least in Ephraim's path.
That's one small issue with Lyon, the 'truth' about Lyon is not the same in the two story paths. Eirika's path Lyon is controlled by the demon king.
Ephraim path Lyon was infuenced, but is still in control.
At the very least, he was willing to go to war, and risk destroying Magvel in order to prevent the calamity that was going to befell Grado.

I like his Ephraim path version a bit more, despite the fact that he's more of a villain there
