Threaten Skills V Smoke Skills

The playstyle I favor is pre-emptive attacks and debuffing enemy units, and I am trying to figure out the usefulness of giving units threaten skills versus smoke attacks. The extra 2 points is nice, but after combat versus pre combat is giving me some pause. Smoke skills are also alot more difficult to come by, so before I start killing off my smoke units for their skills, I'm wondering from a survivability standpoint which skill holds up best that you the player have seen from experience?

Smoke Skills, in my opinion, are better on ranged units while Threaten skills are better on melee units.

It's easy to get a unit into Threaten range, allowing you to debuff them without having to engage in combat (unless they're a ranged unit) and if the unit isn't ranged, or doesn't have Distant Counter, then being able to hit the unit and enforce a Smoke debuff in the process is extremely fun and dandy.

As far as which is better, I guess that mostly depends on what unit we're talking about. A speedy melee unit might enjoy Threaten's more than Smoke's since they'd (probably) want to debuff the enemy before actually engaging them in combat.

Saddly but smoke skills outclass threaten skills, however we do have atk smoke at 4* so it makes it a budget skill. As for spd, def and res smoke they are better than its threaten variants but you can use drive/hone/ spur instead. If you dont want to sacriffice any rare unit i think you should use skills i already mentioned.
Threaten skills work nicely for relatively bulky mele unit, but it pales in comparison from smoke skills range, thus they work in favor for entire team rather than one unit. But there another options like Sothe or smoke dagger user that works just as good.

I wouldn't say Smoke completely outclasses Threaten's since Smoke skills work "after combat" while Threaten's can be in effect before combat even begins.

They can be used in completely different situations to provide different results. Smokes do hit more units, true, but them being in effect "after combat" can be a bit problematic depending on the situation.

I find it harder to use threaten skills because i rarely could use the skill before first initiation and i cant even think up any save position to apply threaten debuff before combat anyway. I guess it's my problem here but thats my opinion about skills.

Both skills are likely to require you to get hit before they activate unless you use windsweep, watersweep, or a firesweep weapon with smokes. Unless you're really good at getting melee units to come into the edge of threaten range but not close enough to hit you?

Smokes are more likely to hit more opponents because they probably group themselves together at least a little bit, whereas half the threaten range is probably area controlled by your team. You can also aim them where you want as long as you find a suitable target. Threatens are very hard to aim unless you have a unit who really isn't afraid of getting hit by anything and everything in the vicinity.

If you want to debuff them before combat ever begins, ploys and Gunnthra's chilling seal are the way to go.
