Team Building

I feel as though I have a lot of good heroes. I have around 40 5* heroes, and about 10 of them are merged to some degree. However, I have a really hard time building teams. I keep wanting to use more of my units, but I always find myself to going back to my main team, which is M!Robin, Ryoma, Hector, and Olivia. What are some ideas for teams, and are there certain guidelines I can use to find a good combination?

What units do u have? I'm guessing u wanna make teams for arena assault, so i'll try to help u there. Horse and armor usually work well for story maps. To start making teams, its best to see how many of each weapon and movement type u have. I recommend making one armor team to use first, as your first team determines the rest of the scores u can get, so build it up as a priority. Go for Amelia or Christmas Robin if u don't have armor march and Christmas Tharja if u don't have an armor mage. Once that team is done, u can start making the next 6. Here's my teams:

Armor
BK, H!Henry, Hector, Effie
Horse
Reinhardt, Xander, Elise, Camus
Flier Mix
Delthea, Beruka (defensive wall, really good), Caeda (maybe), Genny
Guidance 1
Tana, Zephiel, Lute, Celica
Guidance 2
H!Nowi, Arden, H!Sakura, Fjorm
Blade Tome
Ephraim, Nino, Y!Tiki, Joshua
Speed Support
B!Cordelia, Brave Lucina, Ayra, Fae

Since I don't know your units, the teams you can most likely build are horse, armor, and blade tome. For the other teams, build up some dragons and have a nice mix. If u need more help, check out some forums or the Fire Emblem Amino. I'm also Pixile on there. Hope this helps :)

My issue is mainly that I have a lot of good units, but none that work together well. I have most of the components for horse emblem, but I'm lacking main components like Xander and Cecilia. As for armor emblem, I have Hector and BK but that's pretty much it. I do have an ok flier team but most of their ivs are pretty crappy and most of the time my LnD3 Valter has to carry. I also seem to be missing many meta units like Ayra and Celica.

You can work around IVs with seals and skills.
You can just build teams around 1 or 2 units (think about reposition, drawback and swap, that really makes a difference), maybe specialize some of you less meta ones (like anti-green, or anti-sword etc) so they can be useful. Archers are fine too, even non optimal ones.

It’s easier to start with pairs. Take two allies of a different color/role and think about what stat they need to be most effective. Put the respective hone skills on each other. Add ally support for an additional boost.

Example: A death blow brave weapon user benefits most from an attack boost. A desperation mage benefits most from a speed boost to ensure the double. Give hone attack to the desperation user and hone speed to the brave weapon user. Voila.

When you have enough effective pairs you can put teams of 4 together thinking about a balance of roles, phys/mag damage, and color coverage.

Lots of different ways to build a team. I think most can be built around 1-2 units with a couple more to support or counter threats to your main units.

1. Offensive focused team tend to have glass cannon units which must be supported by dancer and/or units that buff and can get them out of danger with movement assists like draw back/reposition/swap.
2. Defensive team that baits the enemies and kills them with quick riposte or breaker skills. These teams work best when units have reposition/swap and a healer to keep everyone at full health
3. Armor/Cavalry/Dragon/Flyer teams. Everyone should have the special buff types specific to the movement type. Super powerful when used with blade tomes

My 7 arena assault teams
1. Armor
2. Dragon
3. Cavalry #1
4. Cavalry #2
5. Dancer Team #1
6. Dancer Team #2
7. Buffed team - Ephraim, Robin(F), Bride Cordelia, and Genny to heal. Ephraim is built to give +4 to DEF/ATT/SPD which makes a huge difference

Best guideline for me is to set up my teams to suit particular scenarios. Team building for PvE and arena should be fluid and designed to counter your enemy rather than trying to shoehorn in a particular team build to fight anything (that’s what your main arena team is for).

However, since you asked about team building guidelines, I usually use the following formula when building a generic team.

Red/Blue/Green/Utility Unit(Dancer/Healer/Buffer) of any colour

Wall/Sweeper/Mage/Utility (Dancer/Healer/Buffer)

If I’m using an offensive colourless unit, then my utility unit is usually one of the coloured units, and I consider who best to pair them with.

Remember it’s about synergy, so even your best sweeper should still cover a weakness of your other team members.

For example I pair Ayra and Brave Ike in arena. Brave Ike is my wall, but he has rally speed/defence and spur spd/def to support Ayra. Ayra is my sweeper, but she has rally def/res and hone attack to support Brave Ike.

If you send us a photo of your charecters that would definitly help. But in general a good trick to a good team as the others have said is by focusing on a pair and than seeing what would benefit them. Ex. I have Ike and Brave Lucina as a pair I like to play with since lucina benefits only physical damagers I added Summer Xander since he can tank a bit and has infanty pulse, last but not least I added P. Olivia since a dancer is always good and she can do ranged physical damaged, that way my team is all rounded. As a rule putting a dancer on it always helps a team
