Can someone tell me how the tactic skills work. I have seen a lot of people start to go wild about them, but I don't really understand the mechanics behind them.

It's a little confusing to understand at first but think about building your team like this.
Tactic skills will only work in your team if it consists of no more than 2 of the same movement type (i.e infantry, horse, armor, flier movement).
You can build your team consisting of 2 infantry, 1 armor and 1 flier and the tactic skill will work, but of course it doesn't have to be 2 infantry, it's completely customizable.
Tactic skills are based on what unit movement type you have in your current team like 2 infantry. 2 armor, etc. They also work like Hone and Fortify so they cant stack with other hones/fortify skills expect those that are goad/ward/drive (anything that says "during combat") etc. Now Tactic skills are useful for mixed teams but they can get panicked...
You need a mix team, with 2 units of the same movement, if you got 3 or 4 units of the same movement then the skills dont activate.
2 fliers, 2 horses = Work
1 flier, 1 infantry, 1 horse, 1 armor = work
1 flier, 1 infantry, 2 horses = work
3 fliers, 1 armor = dont activate for the fliers only work with the armor unit.
4 fliers, = doesnt work
