You can actually make him into a defensive unit.

His stats are 50/43/28/38/19. His defense increases to 44 on enemy phase thanks to close defense, and with Brazen Atk/Def 3 active, his attack and defense are 50 and 51.

Not to mention the possibility of things like Hone/Fortify Cavalry, or Atk/Def Tactic.

Just a possibility, anyway.

I gave my +Spd Eldigan the Fury refine and LnD A-slot. Worked wonders for me. That's a +8/+8 to Atk/Spd for just -2/-2 Def/Res.
