A simple solution to ARs problem

Doing an AR run today I met the true blight of the mode - the light blessed Surtr with multiple Eirs, so I started thinking...

Here's my proposed solution: offer a choice of 3 opponents like Arena/AA (maps/teams visible), so you can have a chance to avoid the cancerous no fun teams. I know what you're thinking - that would take away the challenge, but what if you gained 20-40 bonus lift when you win a rematch (regardless of lift loss)? That would encourage competitive players to want to be battled (meaning the least cancerous team has an advantage).

Hmm, but then wouldn't a lot of players want to play only rematches? And the first to get rematched would be those who don't care so much, so their def setups might not be that thought out or difficult.

No solution would be perfect, but rematches do embody that competitive spirit the most. I was just trying to think of a way to encourage interesting team design, that means to offer a reason to want to be battled, the only reason for that would be if it came with some benefit.

One idea I've heard of which seems interesting to me is the rotating soft-ban. Any team that uses certain units (which vary season to season) incurs automatic scoring penalties.

While that could work it seems like a bandaid rather than an actual fix to me. I'm all for anything that would make that mode actually fun like it was before Surtr - sure the Cav cancer was a thing, but their squishiness is a good balancing factor n a limited turn environment.

While surtr is annoying I think you are making the situation seem worse than it actually is, there are much harder combos with surtr. A single surtr is a sitting duck and you can bait out all the eirs without him being able to reach you.

It's not just about Surtr, he was just the one that triggered my thought process. I was just thinking of ways to make the mode interesting and fun, as opposed to the same similar cancerous teams to play against.
