Sorry for posting about fire emblem the sacred stones.But still,please read this.
I am talking about the Sacred Stones.

Ewan's the best dark mage in the game. As anima mage he's good, but not enough to justify training him over Lute (as sage) or L'Arachel (as mage knight).
You could even use Saleh as sage, he's not better but it will save a lot of effort for minimal tradeoff.
Of course what matters is if you're using the tower of valni. If so, train him up. If not, maybe use someone else.

As for the promotion in general, sage has a lot better stat caps and mage knight has the mobility. I like sages more, but neither is fully 'wrong'

On a side note, don't be afraid to use prepromotes in this game. Units like Innes, Saleh and especially Seth are more than strong enough to keep up with other units.
And don't worry too much, since in Sacred Stones any well trained units should serve you well in any class.
