Zelgius can achieve some pretty interesting builds if you replace his sword with something else, so giving him Distant Counter is not really a waste if you know what you're doing.

Not going to say no, but it's just that built-in DC is what already allows him to stack stuff like Breaths on top of it, which is insane. The only thing I can think of is these new trendy builds with Bullshit Fighter.

Special spiral with slaying edge is just silly. It’s more consistent than alondite, both in player phase and in enemy phase. Honestly slaying edge + DC is basically just better.

You can also try DC, slaying edge, special spiral and quicken pulse set and when you are using mixed team and legendary hector ostia pulse, zelgius will always procs black luna every combat

My Zelgius is +spd, so with speed buffs and a huge attack, I decided to slap Heavy Blade on him. The enemy hits him, he outspeeds and outattacks, BL procs on final hit, destroy enemy, repeat. Done deal for less expensive fodder.

I'm at 10% and wasn't able to get him. :( I wanted him to actually use, though, not to fodder.
