Warding Breath has the advantage of accelerated cooldown whether they target his res or his def. With just warding stance, you are missing out on the defensive boost in exchange for getting the res boost at any distance. If he really needs the res but not the def, that's fine. Otherwise, you are just betting that he is going to be attacked at any range against his res more often than he is going to be attacked at either range = 1 or range = 2 by any damage type.
