My opinion on the datamine: Dorcas + Refines

Wanted to share just what I think.

Dorcas
My lord am I happy. He's a minotaur drawn by Soeda Ippei. An Armor unit with 41 atk. With sturdy stance. Seriously, one of the best free unit.
Sure he won't be a monster like Hector, but still pretty damn strong.

The stats in general seem pretty nice. Especially 39 spd Niles.

Refines

Lon'qu: a bit boring, but probably one of the best things for him. A L&D+fury combo will allow him to destory enemies, take a hit or two and drop down to desperation/vantage.
He's almost on par with Ayra and Karla, I think still below them, but Lon'qu is a 3-4* unit. So screw the whales and build a Lon'qu!

Tana
Like Lon'qu, rather simple. But pretty much what I wanted. With it Tana is a mixed phase duelist, boosting her passible mixed defense to the low 30ies and boosting her already good offence.
It makes her very flexible to build.

Innes
Move over Jaffar, the real magekiller is here.
Seriously, mages and dragons? This is the prize refine.
But.
I kinda feel like the two abilities don't work together: the owl effect is enemy phase, the anti mage is player phase.
Still, pretty good regardless.

And finally the TT seal.
Honestly one of the best batches. Stacking up brazens is going to be fun. Of course, brazen atk/res isn't the most powerfull..
Kinda hope they'll pass on atk/spd
Darting stance is so much better as seal.

I'm actually upset that brazens are becoming seals. Just fueling that sulfur flame of people spamming stats mindlessly. Darting stance I could still accept because it's not straightforward to use, but brazen atk, man...

At least I get to stack it on the brazen atk/def (and vantage) I already gave Ryoma , I guess? Or I could give the same build to Grima and give /him/ vantage

Report

Well, at least brazens are not super easy to use. On 100% hp, it has 0 effect.

Darting stance is rather simple. But it was almost useless as A skill, so I like it as seal.

Everything about the upcoming TT sounds incredible:

- Dorcas looks absolutely amazing, he looks like a mix between Conan and a minotaur. Soeda Ippei really outdid himself this time. Definitely one of the highlights. He's the first free axe armor and he has the highest neutral attack.

- The seals are absurd:
spd/def 2 is exactly what I needed, because fast tanks like Nephenee are going to appreciate this so much.
darting seal will help so many enemy phase tanks to not get doubled by the enemy. The implication that fierce stance or steady stance might follow is insane.
brazen atk/res is awesome but the even more absurd thing is the implication that other brazen skills might follow.

It's a "powercreep" to all the previous tempest trials it seems.

Damn, I'll have to check it out...I was bored at work yesterday, so going through some berserk memories helped get through the day. By the end of the day, it resulted in a pretty interesting compilation of diferent characters, so I'm glad that I posted the thread.

(...)

Anyway, checked the post now and I'm glad that finally someone followed up on the Berserk references. I agree that the stat spread that I suggested there wouldn't work at all for post-Black swordsman Guts, but it does fit the golden age arc (arguably even before he joined Griffith), where he was just a reckless mercenary.

When you mentioned how Schierke would look in FEH, I was kind of hoping that someone in the Halloween banner could sort of adopt the witch look that Schierke is rocking, but Mia doesn't really cut it. But the idea of a Miura crossover in FEH absolutely killed me. Just imagine him doing artwork for some of the heroes. I like that Berserk influences got more into the mainstream tho, seeing that the director of Demon/Dark Souls and Bloodborne was heavily influenced by Miura's art design and it is really clear to see...Bloodborne and Dark souls are basically the Berserk-like games that I always wanted but never got.

I also like the Berserker armor theory build, that you did. To be fair, he should have unobstructed three space movement in that form, but I guess that we have to comply with FEH rules, so infantry is probably the best choice. Also, God hand's bane would be an absolutely insane special and the whole self-damaging theme fits perfectly with the armor's nature.

As a final remark, I did give the second season of the new anime a chance and even though the CG is still abhorrent in some cases, it does stay true to the story and the fights got me super hyped regardless of the graphics. I'm glad I gave it a watch...it helped fill the void in-between those manga chapters.

Report

Thought you'd like that shit😎 I had fun coming up with the names especially. The cgi in the anime is not the best but it's ok. I'm just excited we're finally getting a adaptation that follows the events after the Golden Age. I wish they stuck with the studio that produced the Golden Age Arc OVAs for this new series because they to me did the absolute definitive version of the comics. But Im guessing the budget probably would've been higher for them and who knows if they wanted to even commit to it... whata missed opportunity

I know it'll never happen since the maturity rating is different... but then again there was a Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe.. If only they'd agree on keeping it FEH friendly... man that would be a dream come true for me. And YES his art would be awesome in FEH... I would even go far as to say Kentaro Miura would fit in with the likes of Yamada Akihiro, Soeda Ippei, and Daisuke Izuka.. Imagine seeing their renditions of BERSERK characters. I never had a PS3 till recently and still dont have any games for it, but a few of my friends were addicted to DarkSouls and Bloodborne. Their character/armor designs definitely has Miura's influences

Also dude, if they ever give us that witch hat accessory... all you need to do is plop it on Genny's head and you'll have your Schierke. Then we can have our first psuedo Berserk team with lgn Ike, Camilla, Jaffar, Genny

Report

The Golden age OVAs were impressive, you're right. It filled some blanks from the original anime and the graphics were obviously in a diferent league. Although I gotta say that the original anime still has the nostalgic value for me. The extremely janky and cheap look of the animations and a heavy usage of still images has its weird appeal to me.

I also think that Miura would fit well among some of the FEH artists, especially with Soeda Ippei who seems to be utilizing a sort of rough, realistic design to his characters. If Walhart wasn't so shiny, I could easily put him into Berserk as some side villain/apostle.

If you find the time for it, you definitely should give Dark souls or Bloodborne (sadly only on PS4) a try. In Dark souls 3, there's literally the Beast of Darkness (that badass wolf-spirit-thing that haunts Guts) and Dark souls 2 and 3 basically have Dragonslayer as a usable weapon alongside a repeating crossbow...It's just insane.

You're actually right about that Witch hat Genny. I could see the resemblance there. If only Genny wasn't completely pink...when is IS going to give us a color editing tool for the sprites? I also kind of wanted to add Lewyn in a Berserk team as Serpico, because he very vaguely reminds me of him...if only he had a sword and not green hair.

Report

That's exactly how I feel about the first Vampire Hunter D compared to VH D Bloodlust. Bloodlust is perfect but the first one is for the nostalgia of seeing this amazing piece of work for the first time

I didn't even think of that before about Lewyn, aside from looking like him, his Forsetti effect fits Serpico's wind elemental magic and would look awesome with a sword

This is also why I love the original BERSERK series.. its unfitting but really fitting at the same time

The music in the original series is weird for all the right reasons. You have some really impressive pieces like the behelit theme or Forces and then you hear the goofiest opening theme possible....but I couldn't imagine the series without it. "Put your grasses on, nothing will be wong."

Report

Forces is amazing, Im trying to remember if they did a remake of that song for the OVAs.. they at least brought back the amazing (which is rare) eng dub cast to the first arc remake. I actually realized recently the girl who voiced Casca, Carrie Keranen, also did L'Arachel (which I think I mentioned before).. and Gunnthra?!

I grew up on punk/garage rock bands but when I first watched that opening song, I just thought it didn't fit the tone of the anime... but as I watched it more it grew on me bad and I just loved how it fit the simple style of the montage and Guts' attitude. Speaking of Japanese bands, you ever heard of Guitar Wolf?

Is this what you're talking about from Dark Souls 3?? That boss is just awesome. That armor too

Report

I can't recall if they remade it for the OVAs and I'm also guilty of not watching many japanese shows dubbed, so Casca's voice actress being in FEH was a new thing for me when you first mentioned it.

The opening doesn't fit the tone of the anime at all. It's at its most hillarious in the last few episodes which take quite a dark turn, but it starts with Gut's goofball montage anyway and I absolutely love that...kind of reminds me of the Yakuza games which have a serious story about mobsters and such and it's interlaid with the most absurd sidequests imaginable (like helping a small child buy a porno magazine or pretending to be a girl's boyfriend in front of her dad). It absolutely kills the tone, but it somehow just works.

Never heard of guitar wolf tho. Japanese bands have missed me by a longshot...the only japanese music that I know comes from various anime openings.

And that's exactly what I meant by the mob in Dark souls. The inspiration is really visible there. I remember being so hyped that I deliberatelly died before killing it, just so I can get another round with it. If I only knew that I'd be forced to fight two of these guys at the same time at a later part in the game.

Trust me, Its rare for me to enjoy a eng dub of an anime, I get really picky about that, I just cannot watch a series in english if the setting of the story is set in Japan.. because they shouldn't be speaking anything but japanese! But if its set in a not specific universal setting like, Cowboy Bebop (imo was better than the japanese audio), I'll try it out. But 90% of the time... its horrendous.. terrible over the top screeching voice acting or just plain doesn't fit (like Lachesis in FEH world). Attack On Titan is a recent example of a huge series that could've worked if done right since its in a what, alternate fictional european setting. But the eng dub just blew. I would say at the top of my head the best eng dubs you should give a try (if you liked these series):
-Cowboy Bebop
-Hellsing (both 1st series and Ultimate. C'mon, they actually do decent british voice acting here, it makes more sense than japanese, and Paladin Alexander Anderson sounds irish)
-BERSERK (I loved it. Start out with the original 90's series. Guts, Griffith and Cascas were not perfect but they fit. Especialy Griffith's, He was really did a great job capturing his character, sometimes uncomfortably. Plus, check out the tons of outtakes with the eng dub crew on the original tv series, they are really really funny)
-Mitchiko and Hatchin (Its set in Sao Paulo Brazil, ok accurately it should've been portugese but the eng fit better for me than japanese. The main voice actress for Mitchiko was badass and likable

I've been wanting to play Yakuza for years... never got around to it but Its on my list because I heard its from Yu Suzuki, who did the Shenmue series, hence the mundane side quests which I love that kinda stuff

Honestly I'm not an expert on J-rock bands or anything, my wife covers that shit, K-pop etc. But this band... if you dig any sort of punk or rock stuff... they are to me one of the best bands ever... their energy.. here:

Careful, I'd turn the vol down a bit, they recorded the whole JG album in a vol higher than normal volumes, it will blow off your ears if you are using headphones

https://youtu.be/nR7B4dm52yM
off of Jet Generation

https://youtu.be/biB8SjAHINM
whole Planet of the Wolves album
(the first comment from Fuzzy Nova is pretty accurate)

If its not your cup of tea, that's cool too man

Report

Cowboy Bebop is one of the few eng dubbed animes, that I watched and I loved it. I could imagine Hellsing being quite good dubbed as well, because the whole setting just begs for being in english and the japanese voice actors trying to pronounce some of the non-japanese names is a bit cringy to say the least. Also, I recently convinced my gf, that we should watch the old berserk together, so I might as well go for the english dub.

As for Yakuza, I'm not entirely sure if it's directed by Yu Suzuki, but his Shenmue definitely inspired the overal design of Yakuza later on. The Yakuza devs also recently released a Fist of the North Star game, which is apparently cool as hell, but even goofier than I though possible (a short clip from one of the mini games there): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a2QwnePRGek
Sadly, yet another awesome game that I probably won't have the time to play.

I gave a listen to the Guitar wolf guys and I definitely should have paid more attention to your warnings, because I'll probably have to get my ear drums replaced. I could imagine going for this when I'd be trying to pump myself up, but it's a bit too loud for me for casual listening. The energy is definitely there tho.

Report

Haha oh man sorry bout your ears. No, I understand, I cannot listen to them all the time, not that often these days.

Yea you guys definitely should rewatch BERSERK and Hellsing in the eng dub, it'll make it a bit more interesting if you haven't yet. Another one, or anime movie I forgot to mention is Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust. Now, I'm not sure if you've seen this because I'm surprised some of my younger friends in their mid late 20s that are hardcore into current anime have never heard of it. But, I'm hoping you have since you are familiar with old shit like frigging the God of Gamblers. But if you haven't, you gotta. This film is gorgeous. Its from 2000 and the art style, production quality (and voice acting) still holds up 18 years later. I first saw this in highschool and was blown away by how beautifully was made. Its produced by Mad House studios, you know, the earlier anime movies Ninja Scroll, Golgo 13, Wicked City, Perfect Blue, CLAMP's work then literally like 10 billion modern anime series from Death Note to Highschool of the Dead, Parasyte, Death Parade, One Punch Man

Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust is an absolute classic. I recall there being a Vampire hunter D anime as well, but I haven't seen that. The art style is really distinct in that one from what I remember and I also remember some pretty disturbing imagery if I'm not mixing it up with something else.
I'm closely familiar with the work of Mad House, I haven't seen a bad thing from them, it's crazy. They also produced Paprika which features music from the Berserk composer/musician (the one who did Forces).

I especially like when the japanese animated movies deal with some more serious topics, like Ghost in the shell and Akira (although those are not Mad house produced)...those are some of my absolute top anime movies.

What?? Oh man that's amazing. Kenshiro stirring a cocktail which such honed focus. It's actually kinda harder than it looks to learn to properly stir a cocktail smoothly with a mixing spoon into the motion to look as smooth as a blender. I basically do what he was doing for work too, tending bar.

If its from the people that did Yakuza, is it SEGA? they still made great games after giving up on the console wars. Yea I hear you about not having much time to commit to these new games nowadays. My last console was the 360 and I stopped last year after the battery pack died, just didn't bother to get a new one. With FEH, its convenient since its right in my phone, but I'll admit I sometimes overdo it on this too.

You remember the Koei Fist of the North Star Dynasty Warriors type games?

Report

And when he closes it up with the "you are already drunk" line at the end, it's aboslutely golden. I can admire a well mixed cocktail tho. I remember trying to mix up a cocktail when our blender stopped working and it was a disaster because I lost patience halfway and just served it anyway. Bar tending is a pretty tough job to master.

And it is indeed Sega. They aren't completely dead luckily and still apparently make some awesome games. I sometimes wonder if portable/mobile-based gaming will ever replace home consoles and such. Nintendo already kind of does this with the Switch and these mobile games that they publish are also relatively popular.

And yes, I do remember Tecmo Koei's Fist of the north star. I remember playing it on my friend's 360 and it was exactly the type of mindless fun that I wanted and it was awesome in splitscreen coop. There's also a Berserk Dynasty warriors-like game from what I've heard.

Report

This thread has been officially berserked. Also, this armor looks remarkably like the berserker armor, although there is one other that resembles it even a bit more, because it doesn't have the hairy part on the helm. It comes from one knight who fights like an absolute madman...even beast-like. It kind of looks like Guts fighting when he completely loses his mind.

Report

He's called the boreal outrider knight, I think you'll be able to find some videos for him as well. The only thing that's a bit iffy in his case is that he's got this whole ice theme going for himself, but other than that, the whole feeling when fighting this guy is exactly what I imagine when going against Guts gone nuts.

Report

Just watched a video of him... he is hyper aggressive.. maybe not the speed of how Guts seems but I get what you mean about his raw aggressive offense. His size is like an apostle knight, super intimidating

High Res Glacies/ Iceberg users will love Brazen Atk/Res. Micaiah, Deidre, Mathilda, Fjorm, the +res-def Sonya I have

I agree the refine to Innes's Nidhogg doesn't synergize with it's owltome effect but I think it does help him really well from my experience of using him and always running into the problem of getting crushed with the retaliation of a distant counter dragon due to his paper thin defense. Also, I don't see the issue some people are having with him getting killed on enemy phase after being away from an adjacent ally. That's why we have Reposition/Swap. I've been using this same trick with my razzledazzle Pain+ double Sav Blow healers since their refines... have the healer throw the Pain nade at the enemy with a tanky defensive unit close behind, and immediately have the bulkier unit, sling the healer behind him/her with repo/swap. You can do the same with Innes

I actually see a lot of potential for Brazen Atk/Res. Somebody already mentioned high attack/res low speed mages like Micaiah, but what about benchlord? Arena Alfonse with Brazen atk/res seal and Fury in the A-slot (to reach <80% easier) will have a defensive stat spread of 48/42 (def/res) when below 80%. Not to mention his 74 attack (fuck you, Grima).

Unbuffed, by the way.

Report

It'll def help with his res, don't remember his res stat exactly but I think it was low

Just wait til when Brazen Atk/Def seal comes out... triple stacker Atk/Def Alfonse... 21 extra on both Atk and Def

Mind is blown

Merges, smerges

Report

Though I think that we might not see many other brazens, or at least no atk/spd.

Them releasing darting stance as seal over the other ones seems to show that they know which ones are weaker.
Brazen Atk/res and darting stance are good as seals but bad as A skills.

Report

Yea I realistically don't think they'll release a Braz Atk/Def seal anytime soon.. Its definitely nice to imagine. About that Darting Stance... Im looking forward to that.. for units with great atk or res or def but mediocre speed in the late 30's that'll get doubled to death by the meta flash units, that seal on a build with Darting Blow 3 can free the need of Quick Reposte 3 in the B Slot (if theyre also getting buffed by a couple of drive /spur spds) and opening the option for Desperation or Vantage/Guard/Special Spiral while allowing them to double on both phases rather than just enemy. They'll be able to fire off that def or res focused special quicker too
