...even accounting for those two skills, 3 adjacent teammates, a defense boon, and TT bonus, that only gets her to 36 defense. So thankfully this creature will never see the light of day. She's missing out from not having close counter, but she can tank anything short of Hardin and Hector tier anyway.

I think your math is a bit off. She's got 48 in the picture, knock that down to 44 to not include TT bonus stats. She would actually hit 50 def with 3 adjacent allies, not counting spurs. Still, it's true that basically useless without Close Counter.
