Merric build

I don't really want to make Merric into an offensive mage as I feel the other green units can do his job better so I want to use a more defensive build on him. On a CC set should I run +spd as he reaches 40 speed with the effect of his refine tome or should I wait for +atk as it's his super boon and he can appreciate all the attack he can get. Looking at his stats however it's kinda hard to see him a really great defensive mage when he's def is an ok 28 and his res is so garbage you can't even use something like atk ploy to help him defensively. I kinda always was disappointed with his refine if I'm being honest. It tries to make him more offensive instead of improving his defensive side he was known for in heroes. Idk what should I do with this man?

To be fair, Merric was "known" for being a defensive mage because his attack was so lackluster that there was really no reason to make him an offensive mage, and even then Merric wasn't "known" for being anything other than that annoying pity breaker that most people didn't want.

With his refine, he can actually become an offensive mage since his Excalibur refine brings his attack to 45 with a neutral attack stat and no ally buffs.

If you're wanting to build him as a defensive CC mage, then Gronnowl is arguably the best choice for him since it increases his stats for each ally near him (basically build him as a faster Boey with less defense).

Atk Smoke lets him tank better against multiple foes while Close Def is just a good choice for CC mages in general.

If you want my opinion, then I'd advise you to just make him into an offensive mage. Sure, he's not gonna deal as much damage as a Bladetome unit (which is already an unfair comparison to begin with) but he can still deal some decent damage if need be.
