Merging Masked Marth 4* versus 5*

Hey, I'm pretty new to this game, so I need some advice here.

I currently have a Level 40 4* Masked Marth, which currently has Silver Sword, Ardent Sacrifice, Glacies, Darting Blow 3, Pass 3, Breath of Life 3, and Breath of Life 1 seal. He also has 500 skillpoints. Just so you know, I only have Glacies as a placeholder until I can get a better one. The whole goal was to make an offensive support Marth to go with my Brave Heroes 5* Lucina, who has an S-Class Ally Support with Masked Marth.

I just received a 5* Masked Marth from the Tempest Trials, and now I'm not sure what to do. I have enough feathers and red badges to upgrade my 4* MMarth to become a 5*.

The way I see it, I have a few options.
- Upgrade old MMarth, and then merge the new MMarth into the old one.
- Merge new MMarth into old one, and then upgrade old MMarth.
- Merge old MMarth into new one
- Inherit Breath of Life 3 from old MMarth to new one, and then just rebuild the entire set with the new MMarth

I'm so confused. x__x I don't really know how Merging works much, and if they get to keep the skills of the old one. Please help!

The way merging works in this case is the following:
Merging the 5 * M Marth onto the 4 * one will give sp, the skills that the 5 * one had (which is only Falchion), but no bonus level.
Merging the 4 * M Marth onto the 5 * one will do the exact same. You'll have all those skills immediately available and already learned.
Promoting the 4 * into 5 * and merging will do the same BUT gives a bonus level, so promoting and merging is the beneficial, but also the most costly.
Hopefully this sloppy explanation helps.

I'd say to promote before merging. 5* has better stats and will hold its own much better than 4*. Besides, 4*40+10 is only about as powerful as 5*40+4, as I recall. And with how frequently Marth? comes up, it'll be relatively easy to reach 5*40+10, even without promoting the 4*s you get from trials.

Personally I would unlock the potential for your 4* masked Marth then merge your new 5* masked Math into the old one. When you merge, the main unit will retain all of the skills that you have put on them as well as unlock new ones. So you will unlock falcon for purchase with SP. I will say though it's generally not a good idea to merge higher star units into lower star units because even if you are at 4* +10 and unlock potential you won't keep the +10. The unlock potential resets you to level 1/40 +0. And as a bonus when you do unlock potential of the 4* units and reset their levels you actually will gain a lot of SP as you work to level the unit back up to 40.

This is a lot of my ramblings but I would definitely recommend
1. Make the 4* Marth into a 5*
2. Merge the blank (or new) Marth into your built up Marth you just raised to 5*
3. Grind back to 40.
Pros: you get a 40+1 masked marth that kept the build that you have grown accustomed to. You get a suppressing amount of SP getting back to 40. ~20SP*4 per level +6SP per unit you kill.
(QUICK EDIT) 100% UNLOCK THE POTENTAL THEN MERGE YOUR NEW ONE INTO YOUR OLD ONE, you will keep the 500 sp, the ally support rank and all your skills.
Cons: 20k feathers is alot, takes some time to level a unit to 40.

Unlocking potental (advanced growth)
Raises the unit up one rarity level( 4* to 5*)
Resets there level to 1 (lvl 40+3 4* -> lvl 1 5*) YOU LOOSE ALL OF YOUR MERGES!!
You retain all learned skills and weapons you had prior (Weapon, support skills, A, B, C, etc.)

Merging allies
Mr. Poofinator's description is on point except I do beleave that when you merge into a unit, you don't receive the skills (I haven't tested it) and if you put a 5* into a 4* I'm pretty sure you get a +1 for your 4* but unlocking potental removes this +1 merge

Tempest trial unots: they all have the same neutral IV's so the marth are identical except for the builds you put on them.

I hope I could help you out with this explanation, I wish you good luck on summoning

Huh, so merging a 5 * into a 4 * does give bonus levels. Though to be honest I wouldn't recommend that, exceptions being supermerge builds. On another note, I gave Olwen Blarblade + from Odin, if I get another Olwen with better IVs I just merge the Olwen with Blarblade + onto the better nature one and she'll have access to it, therefore don't have to kill another Odin.

Merging works differently depending on the rarity level of the units. If you merge a 4* into a 5*, you’ll gain all the skills of the 4*, and all learned skills will stay learned, but you won’t gain any extra stats. If you merge a 5* into a 5* OR a 5* into a 4*, the same thing happens, but you also gain what I’ll refer to as a merge level. A merge level increases two stats per level and you can gain 10 merge levels, hence the terminology +10. In your case, I would promote the 4* to 5* and merge the two together. TT units are not typically building at 4* and have very limited merges to work with.
