merge Eirika problems

what if i merge Eirika *5 -hp/+res with Eirika *5 +atk/-def? is gain atk stat or just gain random stats?
and if i have Eirika *4 +atk/-def, should i promote it to *5 or just use Eirika *5 -hp/+res?
