Making use out of similair units

We have a lot of units now with overlapping uses. Especially red units have hit hard, but in general loads of units have fallen by the wayside.
Not top notch 5* units have it the worst. They don't have easy merges going for them

So I was wondering if there were people out there who used specific builds to allow two similair units be more differend.

My biggest example is Hardin. I have a B!Hector (+hp-spd)now who's just overall a better unit. I had a few Hardins (3) to pick from.
Had I chosen for a normal one like +def/-hp he'd just be a worse B!Hector. So I picked +res -def. Not the best in isolation, but it allows him to get a role that Hector doesn't have. Adding in warding breath, aether and a qr seal and he becomes a solid anti magic sustain tank.
Not a wall, he need the aether, but he'll often heal up in time.

The only way those units can really be usable is with a weapon refine which has been happening with many generic units such as saber who had good offenses but were easily trampled by Ayra, Mia, Soleil, Karla, etc.

My advice is to wait for a refine for the units you’re thinking of...the only truly useless red that I found was Seliph even after he could refine for Sigurd’s weapon he was still mostly trash. But in this game any unit can be usable if you put in enough effort

Of course the units I'm talking about are like 8 or 7 out of ten, compared to 9s and 10s.

Take my example, Hardin.
He's still a damn good unit. DC weapon, mixed defences, doesn't get doubled by slow tanks.
But Hector is just so powerful..

A unit like Saber before refine was differend, he was like a 5/10.

Easy just change the weapon. Let's say I have Abel and Roderick. They basically do the same thing so how do I make them different? One has a firesweep lance and the other a brave lance. That way I don't have an overlap of purpose. There's no way to stop their general use from being the same it's just what you choose to put on them. And weapon choice was the best way to do it in this example.

Another example is between Gordin and Leon. Both are very similar to each other but I differentiate them in that I go for Brave Bow with Leon and Slaying Bow for Gordin.

For Hardin he does have some pros over Hector. He doesn't have to run DC. So the difference right there is you could use Warding Breath (like you did) or Steady Stance 4. Then you can even change the B slot based on that as well. And your seal might change based on that B slot. Even with the +Def you can still run Warding and be almost as good at tanking mages. With +12 from the Warding stacks (I do this) he becomes pretty hard to kill. The ivs I have are -Spd+Res though.

The most optimal dream build I can think for Hardin is pure enemy phase, though it is expensive. if you go Steady Stance 4, VF, CD/DD3/Bondskill no one is gonna have a fun time against that.
