Let's Discuss: The Holy War

So, I was looking up Sigurd and Deirdre and had one of the biggest WTF moments of my life. This is the only time where there has been...incest in a FE game. Fates doesn't count. (I mean Azura is your cousin in the game so I guess that is incest,,,idk, the thought of it makes me sick XD)

I just found out that Arvis is the father of Julia, whose mother is Deirdre. Deirdre is the half-sister of Arvis...so...doesn't that make Seliph and Julia cousins/siblings? And doesn't Julia fall in love with Seliph? If so, WTF

I dont remember any reference saying Julia fall in love with seliph. But Im pretty sure you could pair Julia and Seliph in the game.

Error human history is filled with these stories. It's more common than you think especially in the old european days.

Narcian captures Clarine by telling her she can see her brother, and try's to rape her... I don't know if he succeeded... but it is very likely he did... Rutger releases her and they join you. Fun times...

Ohh... you my comrade have only played the two worst FE games imo. You need to play Binding Blade, Blazing Sword, Genealogy, POR, Sacred Stones, Mystery of the Emblem. Just play them all pretty much. The only bad FE game I have ever played is Shadow Dragon on Famicom. It's slow, certain characters are WAY better than others, and it has a bad convoy system. The DS remake was great though!

Awakening and Fates...are the best!!! AND YOU KNOW IT!! XD I'll have to check them out. But Fates will forever be my favorite Fire Emblem game.

Conquest is cheap artificial difficulty, Birthright is easy, Revelations has god awful map design and seems unfinished. The entire game feels like a guided tour, "Corrin, let me tell you everything about this town". I love how Genealogy did the children system with two generations, but Awakening and Fates did it awfully. Echoes is the first FE game since New Mystery, that I would say is really good. Awakening and Fates are both just ok.

Report

I humbly respect your opinion! And I'll admit that the map design for the Floating Isle level is flawed in Revelations, but what game isn't without flaws? To me Fates has little to none.

Azura doesn't count, everyone marries their cousins in fantasy. (Frankly I find the idea of pairing Corrin with any of their Nohrian siblings far more squicky than Azura - they may not be blood relatives, but they were raised as siblings, so to me it's just...ugh.)

From my (admittedly limited) knowledge of the plot of Genealogy of the Holy War, I'm pretty sure the fact that Deirdre and Arvis had a kid together is not supposed to have been a positive thing (I think it was a plot by the villains?), and I don't think Julia/Seliph know they're related. The whole thing is still admittedly a bit squicky, and I'd be very curious how they would handle this plotline if they ever did a remake for western audiences (which I hope they do, because for whatever reason Genealogy is the old FE game that I most wish I could play).

Report

They are, but I think they don't know that right away? I don't really know, but I'm pretty sure I've heard that. (Haven't played the game myself, really wish I could.)

Fair. ;) From what I've seen, FE loves incest (seriously, Fates somehow managed to be incredibly incestuous despite containing almost no actual incest), but I think Genealogy loves it most. It's definitely a bit off-putting at times.

Report

I love Fates and knew about the "incest". But the only real form of it, if you can call it that, is when you marry Azura. Which I've done. I don't regret it XD

Report

I love Azura so much, and my desire to marry her keeps conflicting with my desire to play as F!Corrin. If I ever play a game as M!Corrin, you can bet I'll do it. ;)

(Now, if only they'd actually have let us marry Azura as F!Corrin, but that is not an on-topic rant.)

I have a file with both Corrin's. I bought my male version from the board.

You're stating all the reasons there won't be a remake or re-release for the West. I can think of 4 FE games that would get remakes before the less popular titles are considered (Blazing Blade, Binding Blade, and the two Radiant games). It's especially true now that Fire Emblem is one of Nintendo's more prominent IPs. I mean what happened with Deirdre was pretty much rape however you want to spell it out on top of being incest. Nintendo didn't even let the original onsen DLC come over untouched lol.

I mean they rewrote the support conversation with Soleil for the West (let's please not start a debate on this stupid subject btw). I can only imagine the conversations regarding all this stuff.

Report

I think they were right to rewrite the support with Soleil (and that's all I'll say on that subject), and I can understand why you'd think they wouldn't bring this game to the west as a result, but like...it's possible to portray something really screwed up without making it seem like the game condones it? I admit I'm coming from a place of not having played the game, but it seems to me like something that could be done if the writers were determined enough. Whether they could do it and still end up with a T-rated game at the end, I don't know, so I will understand if it never happens, but that doesn't stop me wishing it would.

One of the reasons I think they should remake Genealogy in particular is because the child mechanic is so popular, but under no circumstances should they ever again try to shoehorn it into the plot like Fates did. I'd rather not have child units at all than have that happen, so if IS really wants child units, remaking Genealogy seems like the ideal way to do it. That said, I know it's probably not first on their list of remakes, and if they ever remake Binding/Blazing Blade or the Radiance games, I will be so there.

Report

Oh, I never said you couldn't write a story about that subject matter well. But it's not going to appear in Nintendo essentially First Party content in the West. And let's face it: it's not like the original story really did anything well-written with that part of the story. So now you're running into the whole damned if they do damned if they don't issue: if they rewrite the story to remove that content or change it, purists will lose their minds. But Nintendo would never let them release it as was.

I do agree that I'd like to see something more akin to a story told over generations than more shoe-horning in of the parent/child mechanics just because Awakening was popular. Fates was maybe the worst-written game in the series, and that's saying something as Fire Emblem will never be confused with Shakespeare.

Report

Honestly, I think purists always lose their minds when it comes to remakes, and I can say that having been one of the purists losing her mind, back in a different fandom in another life. I'm older and (slightly) wiser now, and I recognize that making changes to the original can just as easily be for the better as for the worse. I really don't think it's realistic to try to cater to the "everything must be EXACTLY as it was" mindset, because you'd never succeed. (If you did, you'd just be re-releasing the original game.)

God, Fates' writing was awful. As a newer fan of the series, I only really have Awakening (and more recently Echoes) to compare it to, but it was definitely the worst of the three. I honestly think three games in one was biting off more than the developers could chew, and while I really liked a lot of Fates' game mechanics, I think the writing really suffered. There was a fair number of interesting characters, but the plot made absolutely no sense, the characters made a lot of really stupid decisions, and the support conversations just seemed so lackluster compared to Awakening. My hope for the next main title is that they take all the energy they put into making three Fates games and put it into telling a good story instead. (Probably wishful thinking, but I can dream.)
