I realise I haven't been using Faye in a while, and it's kind of sad. For one, I like the tanky ranged user thing with CC (namely people like Henry and Gaggles). And not only that, but I also like her as a character and used her a fair bit back when I got her.

I like her CC set, and especially since mine is +Def. I realise the Devilish Bow may open up some different possibilities, considering countering ranged is still succeptible to the likes of Quickened Moonbow Reinhardt even if you have double/triple Distant Def.

like is ranged tanking a good role? I like CC because it opens her up to flexibility in that aspects, but then you sacrifices other stats for it and the like...

I don't generally like CC tanks without owl tomes because they tend to lack stats. Like, Sophia for example, her defenses are pretty respectable and same goes for Henry, but Henry has to give up his atk to have HP comparable to sword infantry like Laslow who aren't even as slow. Boey gives up his res, which is better or worse depending on how good you are at planning. You're simply playing a role that most units do with 10-15 more stat points, but if you have an owl tome that compensates a bit, and maybe you make up for not having wo dao by hitting their res.

It's borderline hypocritical for me to analyze this way because they work, but my point is that I can get the job done with a 157BST unit without killing a pineapple and I'm not making use of their range, whereas if I go DD...

Absolutely. Sadly.

A guy once mentioned how it's "funny" that L.Ike can simply solo stuff like Clarisse Lunatic, but that's simplifying things a lot. He has access to built-in DC, comes with a Breath skill and a 4-Turn Aether... it speaks for itself.

That said, this isn't to say they don't have their own unique roles in comparison. Ike still pretty much always sucks against magic, whereas these first two are good at tanking both ends.

I'd save it for the armours though. They have wards, they have stats, if they don't have atk they have speed and special fighter, just so much easier and merges not needed so I can use feathers elsewhere

That is pretty good for her considering it opens up your B slot to run something else other than guard. Can you refine it?

Trust me when I say that CC isn't good on her even with +DEF (mine is +DEF too and -SPD). The triple Distant Counter Build is the best for her since:

First: You won't need a distant counter unit for mages, bow units and even some dagger units.
Second: Getting Distant Defence is easier to get than Distant Counter (my opinion)
Third: Slapping Iceberg on her (when she's -RES this could be a problem) lets you one round nearly every mage, bow and dagger unit in the game (normal attacks deal about 18 Damage minimum , with Quick Riposte getting Iceberg off once in a fight she will deal a minimum of 35-45 Damage with Iceberg)

And I know "she takes way more investment than any tanky mage or distant counter unit". When I told you that my Faye (+1) nearly soloed the L!Tiki Abyssal Map with the help of a healer to keep her at Quick Riposte range and some little buffs, would that convince you to build triple DD?
