How does Quick Riposte actually work?

Does it only work on defense? And is the activation order:

1. Attacker, Defender, Defender [QR], Attacker
or
2. Attacker, Defender, Attacker, Defender [QR]

?

Vantage is different from quick riposte; QR lets you double attack regardless of the speed battle, while vantage influences turn order. If attacked with the conditions for Vantage met, instead of being A > D the defender instead strikes first, making it D > A. Speed stuff still works as you'd expect, if defender has enough speed to double its D > A > D and if attacker has enough speed, its D > A > A.

Soooo as far as I understand it, quick riposte essentially lets your unit double attack regardless of being outsped or tied. So if the order would normally be A > D due to speed tie, its instead A > D > D(QR). If you're outsped, its A > D > A > D(QR) and if you're faster, you double attack naturally without needing QR. It only procs on defense!
