How does Fortify Def Work?

Hi I’m new to this game so this might be a stupid question but this is bothering me. I wanna put fortify def on my Anna but the description of fortify def says it grants +3 def on adjacent allies. What I wanna know is if the +3 def also effects the user with the skill.
