How do arena matchups work?

I'm trying arena this week and for the first time I'm getting matched up against 5* +10 teams. My team is a 4* unmerged Arvis, two unmerged 5*, and one 5*+4 dancer (whom I have been using in arena for a while). I almost have never seen merged units and suddenly I am seeing full merge teams with all 5*, even with my 4*. How do these matchups even work? I keep getting destroyed by these 5*+10 characters, they're way out of my level. Is it because of my one merged character?

You probably are feeling wrath of moving up in the tiers. If you have been bouncing between 18 to 20, then it’s more than likely just the increase in merged units recently.

I've been bouncing between 18 and 19 for a while now, but I don't have any of the units except unbuilt Arvis this time round so I dipped to 17. Up to 18 again and suddenly it's a world of difference...

I'm not sure how Arena match-ups work exactly, but it might actually have to do with your +4 merged unit. This is because when you choose the Advanced difficulty, the match-up system tries to pair you up with teams that are somewhat stronger than your team. That's my guess but I could be wrong. Also, I have in the past used level 1 characters just to get the Arena bonus and I have almost always fought enemies (in Advanced difficulty) with either one level 1 like me, or a few levels higher.

Yeah, I don't know because I've been using the same team and never faced anything like these units. The only difference is I grinded up one of my 5* I've been using so now she has Aether and Drive atk 2, I don't know how much of a difference that would make.

Might have to do with seals as well. You might be using expensive, highly upgraded seals which increase your score.

I didn't consider that, but I think I'm only using a distant defence 3 seal.

This could be wrong, but the following might affect your matches on certain opponents:

Your Characters' Levels
Your Characters' Rarities
Bonuses gained from Merge Allies
Your total base stats after removing the effects of all skills, including weapons
Value of Equipped Skills (eg. Distant Counter 300 SP is worth more points than a 200 SP skill)

Again, this is just a guess and I am not certain that this is correct.

So me giving one of the 5* Aether and a few others could have made a sizeable difference? That makes sense, thanks.
