High Investment - Worthwhile or Waste?

I'm a free-to-play player, but by conserving my resources since June (after first trying the game in May but quickly burning myself out of orbs), I've amassed a collection of nearly 35 5-star heroes, not including the 3 merges I've made.

It suddenly struck me that, hey, I can beat Squad Assault and Arena Assault with ease now, so why don't I try killing off some of my better units for their good skills and invest heavily on my favorite heroes? (Celica, Ayra, Nephenee, Fjorm, Axura, and Dorcas atm)

For example, I have a -Spd Mia who is amazing, but still just doesn't quite feel right with the loss of 3 points of her most crucial stat (I sadly have the same problem with Ayra). So I realized, hey, I could kill her off for Flashing Blade (also since her voice actor aggravates me to no end). But I just can't bring myself to decide on who could best use it, not to mention who has a good enough nature to use it, as an A slot, the most crucial stat-buffer, has to be sacrificed. Similar situation for my neutral Katarina, who has Swift Sparrow, but I just love using her as well.

So to the question. Is it worth it to kill off great units for those you truly adore? Maybe I'm overthinking it and more of a collector than I thought, but I just can't part with any 5 stars I summon as they are still quite rare even to me. From your experience, what's your answer?

It's better to play with the units you like. With the Weapon Refinery out, there are very very few units that are completely unredeemable(Odin comes to mind, at least until we actually get access to Thoron +) Some take more work than others, but I've seen some pretty wicked builds out there for some heavily underrated units.

If you have a favorite unit you really want to build, and they need a skill that a rare 5 star has (Example, my Fae really, really wanted Steady Breath, but I had only one Brave Ike and was loathe to let him go for a long time, despite almost never using him) pull the trigger. I did so killing off my Brave Ike for my Fae, because I intend to max merge her and make her part of my arena team, thus using her optimal build is best.

So it would be worth it to summon for, say, BIke or Sigurd, for Steady Breath and Spd Smoke (for my Ayra)? I just worry other units I like will be released, but now that I think about it, I honestly only want Laevatain (yes, I'll kill my only Hector for her!), Summer Corrin, and Linde right now. Besides that I'm hoping for a Flora or Kana in the future, but not much else. The special units are really the worry factor for me.

Hmmm. Steady Breath on Ayra could be cool, allowing her a guaranteed Regnal Astra on her counter. It would be worth it, and using the +spd sacred seal, you can patch up her -spd.

And I know how you feel, holding onto hope that certain units will be added. I really hope that one of the beast morphers will get added. Panne especially. If she ever is added, I will find a way to make her work. I swear it.

I think there's a balance. I've definitely invested way more in my Soren, Ike, Ephraim, and Titania than I think any true competitive player would simply cuz I love them and I think it was totally worth it. I really like playing with my favorites and I have no qualms about foddering off 5*s I'll never use (or rarely use) to units I adore and could use the skills. Case in point: Got a Takumi with perfect IVs and immediately foddered close counter to my Leon. Either would have worked perfectly well as a close counter archer, and Takumi would have been cheaper but Leon's just cooler, dangit.

In the case of your Mia, I say just keep her around until you find the perfect unit who could use flashing blade. I've also got a -Atk Katarina that I'm going to train to lvl 40 (just cuz) and then user her as swift sparrow fodder once I find the perfect candidate.

IMO It's totally worth killing off great units for the ones you truly adore. What's the fun in playing FE if you can't use the units you want to? :P

Thanks, I guess I really just need someone to tell me to the face, I just have been a miser for so long that I'm struggling to outgrow the habit!

I am all for sacraficing other five stars to make your favorite five stars better. A lot of people say that F2P players shouldn't give away a unit that they only have 1 copy of, even if they have bad IVs, but I feel like if you really like a unit, there's no shame in trying to make them as good as they can be. Like, for example, I sold my only Jaffar to a Roderick for L&D because I really like using Roderick and I never used Jaffar. Same thing with Innes. Back duing the CYL banner I pulled an Innes while trying to get B!Lyn and he kinda always left a sour taste in mouth and I never really cared about him in Sacred Stones either (I never really cared for Prepromotes, except Seth) so after getting Deirdre, I gladly gave up Innes to give Deirdre Fortress Res. It just depends on how you feel about your units and how much you use the unit you want to give away. But overall, I am not against it at all.
