I like to have units that have a lot of mobility: Cavalry and Flier units (especially the Ranged Cavalry and Fliers) are amazing for the much larger maps, Wings of Mercy units are great to come in and clean up the field, and units with Reposition are always welcome. Healers with the Pain+ or Gravity+ (with Dazzling Staff refine) and / or Savage Blow 6 are just as good for chipping down enemies. If you don't have any of those, then just put out a unit that you are the most proud of and have built up to the best that you could. (I love seeing Friends' units with interesting builds or units that received a lot of dedication / favoritism.)
That being said, I strongly advise against leading with "common" units like Reinhardt, Eirika, Nino, Nowi, or Fae. (At least, these units are just ones that I see everyone lead with when I'm building my brigade.) It's going to vary from person-to-person, and if you don't think your Friends have them, then by all means, lead with them--you can easily tell just by looking at your Friend's List if a unit is common or not. They are great and all, but I can only use at most one of them (it also doesn't help that I also have each of them built out the way I want to in case I need them); this means that I have like 30 pointless units I can't borrow because everyone decides to lead them when GC starts.
