"Fun"

So I've been playing this game for a while now and have seen a lot of people and their opinions on the game. One thing I've noticed, though, is that preference over something not "meta" is seen as a bad thing in the eyes of a lot of the community.

I've had people tell me that I was using a unit wrong simply because I wasn't using another unit that could do the same thing my built unit does, but better. Even though FEH is a game built on each individual's preference. Shocking, I know, right? It's not like I necessarily 'care' about people calling me a scrub, or saying I'm wrong, over my preference, but recently I became curious.

What do you guys think is fun? Do you use units you really like, or do you use units that heavily impact the 'meta'? Or do you not even play the game for fun?

Also, what are your thoughts on using 'unit A' if 'unit B' can do the same thing 'unit A' can do, but be better at it? Would you still use 'unit A' because you like them, or would you use 'unit B' because they're better?

I'm curious as to what people's thoughts on the game are, and how exactly they play. Just a way of discussing things with the Gamepress community. :)

I play for fun and use my favorite units (I'm a Tellius fan) and I have just the right tools for the meta.

Try to compress the scope a little bit, because saying that 'unit A' is better than 'unit B' at its role is a little vague. Because in my opinion, it depends on class, be it flier, armored, infantry, or cavalry. Another thing to consider is how rare those units are. As an F2P, I actually admire your work for Donnel, so keep at it. Any unit can be made viable.

To be honest, these are arguments worth considering.

I'll use the better/higher scoring unit over one I might like more. I don't really have any attachments to characters. I've played FE7 and a bit of 1, so I don't know who most of the characters are aside from what they say in Heroes. Ike seems cool based on his dialogue though. Same with Azama. He is unique.

The very nature of the arena requires you to utilize a select few units and skills in order to maximize score and place better, so I do a lot to optimize my arena team and try to squeeze as much out of them as possible. I'm lucky that one of my favorites is also incredibly powerful and high scoring.

That said, I use my favorite units for essentially everything else. Is Hawkeye a better option than, say, Brave Ike? No. Not in the slightest. But that was my first FE game and Hawkeye helped me tear a path through it, so I always think investing in your favorite units is one of the best things you can do in the game and maximize your enjoyment.

If you don't care about the characters, then use the most powerful heroes. Nothing wrong with that. Theres no wrong answer here and both ways can be fun in different ways.

Good question, btw.

As a day-one player, my idea of fun in the game kind of evolved. At first it was collecting 5 star units to actually have a viable team (before skill inheritance was a thing and Takumi ruled the world). After that I found fun in overcoming the chain challenges and infernal stuff with my limited hero pool (which required using the objectively strongest units regardless of my preference). When that stopped being a thing, I found the biggest enjoyment in optimizing units that I remember from my childhood days of playing FE (mostly genealogy, blazing and binding blade), which brings a nice bit of nostalgia and thanks to that I always have something to do during that one hour a day, that I can usually manage to play the game for.

As for the second question: both sides of that hypothetical issue have good arguments, but I personally got into a state in the game, where I don't care abour viability or meta, but I completely understand that other people may like the competitive aspect more.

Any game should be fun. If it feels like work, then I want to get paid (even though I love my job lol).

I'm F2P, so I can't always choose. That presents a different challenge altogether though; how to make the most of what you get. I think I have been quite lucky thusfar, getting good IV's on meta units, so I manage to stay in tier 19,5 easily, even stay in tier 20 from time to time.

The main thing that provides fun for me through this game is finding ways to have 'lower tier' units outperform meta units with sweet builds. My Wrath/reprisal/slaying edge Ogma for instance oneshots 98% of the entire top tier meta units when he's at 1HP, and it's not even gimmicky or hard to set up.

Two things you should maybe try to keep in mind. First, don't trust tier lists. For example, Hardin is widely considered to be the best lance unit. However Effie, who is way more available, has a better matchup spread on both offense AND defense with her best build (DC/Bold fighter/Slaying Spear versus Steady breath bold fighter Hardin). Hardin is arguably more durable, but durability is not the main concern in Arena, for example.

Second, don't let other peoples perceptions of how you should play the game ruin anything for you. Basically, you experience the game the way you want to, so if Wrys is your favorite character, use him!

(P.S.: don't use Wrys ;P)

For the most part I agree... the game should be fun and if you have a preference to one unit over the other because of the game they originate from or because their art or something else. For me, if a unit is objectively better at a role I will always suggest it, for example shiro over a unit like oboro, though that's just fact. Beyond my suggestions it doesnt matter much though, I use Clair like... she is cute to me soooo... I hate certain units though, fir example Rebecca and Oboro aaaand frederick, hated them in their games, and now in Heroes, mainly cause they're bad no matter what I do. Beyond those 2 things, I don't care whoyou use, because I feel like people should be informed of objective fact (steady breath over stance 3) and furthermore opinion (like Niles over Rebecca) because you wouldn't ask questions if you didn't want both right? Lol, Loving your opinions btw Krazytre, I look forward to your answers on my questions 😂

I've had people tell me i'm using my units wrong too, and then I ask for their arena score and theyre naturally a tier 17 scorelet that always end up funneling all their feathers into upgrading units for skill inheritance on limited units, while still trying to say theyre arena gods.

There is no "meta" if you're actually good at the game and know how to get the most out of your favorite units. I score an average of 734 in the arena without fjorm, and the cornerstone of my team is a palla that I have yet to see someone call a well-built unit, even though she does exactly what I need her to do in the arena, while still being one of my favorite units in the game.

There is only one unit int he entire game that is better than another unit in every single aspect, and that is Mia, when compared with athena. There is no reason to ever use an athena over a mia unless you like athena more than mia, because literally anything athena can do, mia can do better.

Every unit has a niche, a unit performing extremely well in one arena doesnt make it better than another unit overall, the best example is that if you need a defense heavy red mage, you're not gonna sanaki over henry, because a well built henry can just tank physical attacks all day like its nothing, while sanaki cant. Anyone that says Unit A is better than Unit B because it can perform scenario C better is an idiot and you should disregard everything they say.

Now that you've pointed that out, Athena will surely get a weapon refine. I used to be like your friends. I put a bunch of skills onto my 1 Winter Tharja. I only recently started building a Gwendolyn and Sheena. I need another Armor Marcher to fodder though.

I use units and skills how I like not what is deemed meta. The whole "meta" thing is irrelevant to me, what's the point in playing if your not using the units you like rather than forcing yourself to use"meta"units that you normally wouldn't use.

There are no trash units in this game if you like them, just because some units perform better then others doesn't mean you want to use said unit.

With this picture, my answer should be clear. You once posted on my question regarding this build too.

I used to play Fire Emblem Heroes all the time, but I stopped about a month ago...I just come back to this websites to see...random things I guess? But regarding the game I just log in every day to get my free rewards.

I don't know what the meta is, in this nor any other game - I do what I want. What I want is purely to have fun and enjoy myself; entertainment. In this case, this Reinhardt build amuses me and I had a great deal of fun with it when I got this project done.

Fun is different for everyone, and you play games to have fun...Or at least in my opinion that's what people play games for. Have fun in any way you desire, I'd rather focus on my favorite characters from the series that I like. Sadly, I never managed to get my all-time FE character, Lyndis. The one that holds the sword anyway.

(It's an honor for me to answer this question asked by the person I admire for contributing so much in this site ^^')

I play for fun, and being pure F2P at that so I'll have to work with some of the worst IVs ever existed and the fodders I can get. This naturally leads to some weird builds in my profile (I'll update all of them soon). Can anything go even weirder than Atk/Res Bond on +atk Deirdre, making a superbane -atk LA!Lyn work, Wrath on a Mama Corrin or a Faether (Fae+Aether) built only with sustaining other dragons in mind? (if you think this isn't weird let me know ^^')

I'm not afraid to fodder seasonals to build units that are actually useful (as in the Deirdre mentioned above), but I don't aim for the best units according to the tier list or whatever. Sure I need to look at the recommended builds listed here and there for reference, but I don't always follow them due to resources and playstyle. People say Legphraim should use Aether, but I found him dying before he gets a chance to heal from damage using it.

And I'll still be waiting for IS to release a sword cav which can outperform my Siegbert (+def -res, Heavy Blade + Galeforce) before I even pull a focus sword cav. Skipped Sigurd, Chrom and Ares already XD

Fun is using what you have to still complete the most you can in my opinion, arising from the combined situation of wanting to aim high in arena and etc but still being in college and having to manage resources wisely XD I can nuke some infernals with the units I have now, and some are just too taxing on my time that I decided to skip altogether. (looking at you training tower quests)
