Fortress Def vs Close Def vs Steady Stance

Is there ever any reason to use Fortress Def over Close Def or Steady Stance?

I'm wondering because I have a +Atk -Spd Fallen Robin, and I was thinking he could actually do a Fortress Def 3 A-Slot, with Fort Def 3 seal. With Expiration, it'd put his statline at 48 / 54 / 24 / 48 / 30, which is pretty monstrous physical bulk with a still-decent attack stat. But then I realized that those other two abilities are probably better.... almost the same benefits, without dropping his awesome atk stat.

EDIT: For clarification, this Robin is for my Arena Def team

Fortress Defense is a boost on both Player and Enemy phase, but lowers attack.

Close Defense is a boost to defense AND resistance only on enemy phase and with close quarters combat.

Steady Stance is a boost only to defense, and only on enemy phase

Depends on what you're going for, really. Fortress Defense is good for units that wants to deal HEAVY damage with specials (Ignis/Bonfire) on both Player and Enemy phase. Lukas is a prime example of this in some builds.

Close Defense is good for enemy-phase oriented builds, so if you want Grima to tank and deal good Ignis/Bonfire damage, without losing the attack, then that's probably your go to, and it boosts resistance if attacked by other dragon units.

Steady Stance is similar to Close Defense, but it's ONLY a boost to defense, not resistance.

So, basically, are you wanting a Player Phase unit, or an Enemy Phase unit?

Well, this is the tricky thing. He's going to be on my Arena Defense team... So I don't really get to control the situation. Ideally I'm giving him Armor March sometime, since he'll be with a Zelgius and Nowi. However, this means he could be baited, or people could attack him upfront.

On a side note, I guess I could also do the Fortress Res seal, since that'd give him way better mixed bulk (boosted up to 32). As another Fortress option.

Hm... well, if your Grima has Vengeful Fighter, then the opposing team might just bait him to avoid the counterattack, unless they're using someone like Alm, who will just flat out murder him.

I honestly don't know since the AI can be a bit weird at.... well 95% of the time.

So orignally I was looking at running Expiration, Swap, Aether, Close/Distant Def 3 /Steady Stance, Vengeful Fighter 3, Armor March 3, and Atk Smoke 3 seal. A solid build, and not particularly odd. But then I was thinking, "Damn, Close/Distant Def /Steady Stance are hard to come by," so then I thought maybe Fortress skills could be useful.

Ah, well your M!Grima is +Atk, putting him at 60 attack with just Expiration alone, so, like someone stated below, -3 Atk from a Fortress Defense seal is really not going to be that big of a deal, at least in my opinion.

I don't really think that it's worth dropping the Atk stat for the Def boost. It really hurts Grima's potential to kill outside of his Special. If you want to stick to his base kit, it is mostly a Enemy Phase set, in which case Steady Stance and Close Defense provide better boosts without the Atk drop. Even if you want to make him Mixed Phase, the Atk drop from Fortress Def really makes it difficult to kill enemies that he might want to initiate against.

if you build a unit like Beruka with her popular build (Ignis, guard, slaying axe+) then you are usually going to want fortress def over close def because when baiting a melee unit beruka will be doubled and she will attack once giving her all 3 charges then you can use the def on the player phase to nuke someone with ignis.

it also helps her survive against bows if you dont run iote's shield

its mainly for low attack units who dont really do much damage anyway and (just personal opinion) for really high attack units who can afford to drop a few points in attack. My M.Grima runs fortress res in the seal slot and i run Fury to offset the -3 attack and with vengeful fighter, he doesn't really need the 3 attack he loses from the fortress res seal because everything just dies

Report

I also decided to run Fortress Res seal on +def/-spd Grima, with Warding Stance in the A slot weirdly enough, and I am digging it so far. 53 attack, 38 def and 38 res on enemy phase. With vengeful fighter and Ignis he kills everything so he doesn’t really need the attack, and I wanted him to have the ability to consistently tank all types, which now he does.

Mostly I'd just say they have a scale of cost. Fortress Defense is available on Seth at 4stars, but the other two are only on limited and 5 star only units.

I'd go with steady stance on the A slot so you can inherit Aether and Steady Breath from a B!Ike later. Steady Breath does work Vengeful Fighter to make for a ridiculous cool down speed.

This is my solo/tempest BK build.
