Does every merge count towards AA or are their score brackets that I need to hit?

I've been content with the second tier in AA but recently I've been wanting to see if I can try and go for the 1st tier. I have a Fae +9 and a Nowi +9 so I put them both to +10, and gave Nowi Aether but the score on enemies I'm facing hasn't increased.

Every merge will count in AA. Over time, the score increment requirements increase due to people getting more merges over time. So yes, every merge counts.

So there are in fact score increment requirements? I wonder what they are.
