Do you need heavily merged units for tier 20 arena?

I made tier 19 and I’m scheduled to move up to 20 next season. My score rn is 4870 and I’m waiting to see if I can get some defense wins. The team I used was fjorm, Joshua, saizo, and Sonya who is +1 merged. The most merged I have on a 5 Star is +1 on a few characters, I have a +9 4 Star laslow but he isn’t optimized yet.
Do I need to start breaking out from her Heroes with heavier merges if I want to get and stay in tier 20? Or would I be fine wit unmerged units as long as I use high BST units

If you want to stay there yes you will need some merges as core units if your bonus units have low ratings

To get to tier 20 is possible without merge. Staying in tier 20, however, need heavily merged units. Just to give you a number, I was 2000 rank away from staying in tier 20 with 4900.

Staying in tier 20 requires about 5k pts now. So yes, you need merges. Less if you run Armor Emblem and legendary weapons/skills like DC, Aether/Galeforce, Black Luna, etc. And 3rd level sacred seals.

As a few others havetold you, you will need 4990+ score to stay on their 20, so for that, around 710 per match is necessary.
So unfortunately no, unless you have at least +2 merges on your core units,or very high scoring skills and specials, you most likely will not be able to stay there.

Even 4990 isn't safe anymore. I had 4994 and got edged out last season.

No. It takes about 4910 to get to Tier 20 and about 4990 to stay depending on the bonus unit roster.

Fjorm is very nice for scoring. (Up to 704 without merge.) Your other units would have to change. The highest scoring f2p unit without merge is BK at 705. So as you can see, armor emblem and a 5 star bonus unit is required to get to Tier 20. And to stay, ~8 merges and armor emblem are required. Armor emblem can help you get away with the least amount of merges. But you would also have a hard time winning since your opponents will have higher merges. And in Tier 20, defense teams are often optimally set up. If you like any of the dragons, start saving them up. Many of them are readily available, strong, and have good BST for scoring.
