Distant Def 3

I have a Distant Def 3 fodder unit wasting space in my barracks. I'd like to SI her DD3 onto Xander, but I'm not sure if that's a good idea. Right now he's running a Fury 3/Vantage 3/Hone Cav build with DD3 in his SS slot.

If not Xander, then would Oliver or Julius be good candidates for DD3???

A double DD xander should make him isanely good at tanking long distance attackers including mages. Give him some good cav buffs and QR and you're set.

If I remember right, his attack is quite weighty, ja? Since you're going with vantage, I would probably prefer fierce stance or fury, just tank the first opponent and then go for OHKOs. Don't use Xander myself though.

Julius :D ! 38 res + DD3 + DD3 seal + weapon + Atk ploy = 61 Res (and 39 def) on ennemy phase. Add QR 3.
You have an insane mage tank :) No one can touch him, even Reinhard

I feel like DD3 in the A slot works best with someone who is meant to mage tank, and I don't know if that's something Xander should do.

Oliver and Julius are perfect for the role. Like Hypnozz said, Julius even tanks Reinhardt with it if that's something you need to do with a red unit :D

Honestly Julius is probably the best candidate here. Xander is much better off focusing on defense e.g. Fortress Defense, Fury, Steady Stance and will likely be able to fight off ranged physical threats as is given his high defense. DD won't really save him against mages.

Julius however, has the passive of -6 atk via Loptuous, and already hits 38 res as is. IMO he's a much better user of Distant Defense, and is easily one of the best mage checks in the game.
