Defense Team is Struggling, Help!!!
My offense rating is good enough to get me back into Arena 19 I think, but I haven't gotten a single defense win yet! I'm really concerned, because otherwise I'll get bumped back into Arena 17. I need some advice on my team. Right now, my lead is Nowi. I never had trouble getting good defenses before; problem is, I changed my team up recently, and I don't remember any of the teams I used in the past.
What kinds of heroes would improve my defense team? Do I need range damage like from my Fallen Takumi or Lyon? Do I need more Tank presence? My Abel and Siegbert Cavalry duo? Hone Dragon Myrrh support for Nowi? Something completely different? Please advise!

A. I’m not actually sure getting a defense win is necessary to move up tiers. As far as I can tell it’s based soley on your offense score, so maybe don’t worry as much?
B. My arena defense has been doing strangely well this week, and considering it’s slightly meme/favoritism makeup I’m kinda surprised your team hasn’t gotten any yet. (My team is Laslow, 2 Inigos, and a Soleil) I’m not great at party comp, but I’ll try my best? (And take my words with grain of salt - I may be on the border of T20 this week but I’m definitely not a super-strategist)
Micaiah is likely going to be your first unit to initiate. Ranged + Flyzura = oftentimes, over-extension. Her Def isn’t great, so even a sword, if danced, could potentially take her out in one turn. From there Flyzura is probably going to be baited, since she’ll probably be the next closest to the enemy, and because she can fly she can probably get there.
Once Flyzura is gone, Zelgius isn’t as much of a threat, and can be baited around the map. Luckily, you gave him Vantage, since with Black Luna he’s gonna be annoying unless the enemy’s packing Firesweep, Mugalir B!Lyn, or a tanky enough red/blue to take Black Luna to the face. No suggestions there.
Nowi is arguably your toughest unit, but relies on being attacked in your enemy phase. A strong, moderately res’d axe can take an initial hit, live, and then your team can gang up for the KO outside of QR range. Guard, while it sounds like a good idea, I don’t think is as good as swordbreaker or the ever-annoying vantage. (I’ve gone against enough Nowis to know which one I’d rather face)

For defense teams you need to build around the fact that the AI will be controlling your units. The common player uses units built to work on the enemy phase, but the AI controlled team gets baited by basically everything, so it's better to put hyperoffensive units on defense teams. This is why Rein/B!Lyn are so popular for defense. Here are some good tips for building a defense team.
1: Brave and Firesweep weapon users excel here.
2: Heroes with Vantage are very effective here. Make sure your units can survive a battle to put them into Vantage range, which can throw alot of players off, especially when paired with a charged special.
3: Put wings of mercy on a ranged character so they can warp next to a damaged unit that was baited in to maybe secure a kill.
4: Guidance is broken, but if running Guidance also run a Dual Rally skill so your flybot doesn't get baited as easily.
5: With armor either go full march, one with boots, Guidance, or none at all. Having an armor lag behind results in a 4v3 for the player.
6: Staff units are super powerful due to the ability to refine into Dazzling.
7: Low charge specials are better on most units, as they most likely won't be survive long to hit more than 3 charge. Exceptions can be made using specials like Galeforce if you can gain extra charges via skills like Heavy or Flashing Blade.
Here is my arena defense team that combines several of these tips at once.
My brave sword Soliel with Heavy Blade gets baited in after getting hit with an Infantry Pulse, +4 charge from the attacks combined with the pulse fully charges Miracle. If she would die to a counter, she survives. My Merric far off in the distance who also got hit with the Infantry Pulse, combined with his own Quickened Pulse seal, warps next to my Miracled Soliel and unleashes a round 1 Moonbow with the Dark Excalibur buffing its damage. The synergy here is that Soliel is most likely going to be baited by a Blue unit. By making my WoM mage a green unit, it should be able to crush whatever is in its way. My Ephraim who had provided that sweet pulse earlier should make his way over soon and, with his refine, should be able to charge his Bonfire and Vantage trap the opposing team.
With this team I haven't gone a week without a successful defense for about three months, and using it on offense occasionally is a blast. You gotta get creative with building these teams because if you think like everybody else, you will lose to everybody else.
