So I just got my second unluckiest pull of all time and got a 5* merric on the performing arts banner. I'm hurting for good units, especially green mages, so is there any way to make him viable?

If you have other green mages at 4 star like Cecilia or Nino I would highly suggest using them rather than Merric, but if noy try the build above.
I do have other 5* green mages, but I am of the opinion that I don'r have enough to deal with 7 different +atk +10 merged hone cav death blow reinhardt's in arena assault. Also, I rarely get 5* units, so I want to make the best out of him. I'll probably give him TA 2 and deflect magic to survive Rein's onslaught.
If you have an Inigo with the following build it will be able to kill Reinhardts +10's (used the Combat Simulator : https://kagerochart.com/damage-calc)
An Inigo that is +0 with:
Gronraven+, Luna, Triangle Adept 3, Bowbreaker 3, Hone ATK 3 can defeat a Reinhardt +10 and B. Lyn +10.

If you don't have Inigo. Merric should do with this build:

Bonfire
Reposition
Triangle Adept 3
Bowbreaker 3
(Flexible)
A +0 Merric with this build can defeat a +10, +ATK Reinhardt no problems at all. B. Lyn +10 you just get attacked first then kill her on your second turn with Merric.
Don't get rid of him. I have a Merric with the same stat spread and he is still very viable. His defense is higher than most mages and can take solid hits from physical units.
His attack reaches 40 which is not bad. You can further bring out his offensive potential with LD, TA, or Fury (I personally use TA).
His speed is rather standard and it is up to player consideration as to if it is efficient or not. I personally think that it is tolerable considering that many units can't double him.
Merrics resistance was already bad to begin with, so you aren't missing anything there.
In short, while it isn't Axura or Inigo, you got an underrated gem. Hold onto him
I pulled so many 4 star Merrics that I was able to merge him to +5. At least I was able to give him an attack boon. He is not great but with budget skills like TA2, gronraven (not +) and QR2 + bonfire he makes a decent enough raven mage that can counter Bowlyn everytime. You are bound to use him on at least one of your arena assault teams.
