One option is to use your free pick for a unit you intend to fodder.

Ephraim I find to be a better pick than Hector due to being more well rounded

Ephraim is one of the best units in the game. Pick him.

Don't fodder him. I don't know who you would want to Fodder his skill to. He would probably outperform them anyway.

Try to get Hector or Ephraim with Orbs and then choose the one one you didn't get. All the units are top tier
