Breath skill vs Close def vs Fortress def/res on Y.Roy

I think the time has come for this discussion.

Breath skill obviously points to aether, though ignis can also be considered. But let's say aether for now. Can maybe heal 10-15 HP, depending on the opponent. Let's say steady breath. But then compared to CD, he takes that much more damage vs dragons, and if H.Myrrh has +atk maybe we even lose? Especially with death blow 4. And if instead warding breath, maybe Zelgius hits so hard we lose even when black luna doesn't come? Especially with L.Hector blessing bonus, especially if at a merge disadvantage.

CD with bonfire seems by far the most solid to me. Doesn't sustain, though, and modern armours and dragons hurt a lot even with 39/38 defenses. Might lose QR. But we survive neutral L.Tiki, and I'm pretty sure she dies to the bonfire.

Fortress def/res offers the added benefit of blocking ranged attacks, but it's a skill heavily in demand and I don't think I like it better than an atk bane. His atk is kind of marginal to begin with, especially for how high def gets nowadays. Against non-dragons I'm actually concerned about his damage output. I mean, at least we're not activating their steady breath and their CD, but sometimes there's almost 40 def there anyways if not 40?

For context, my own take on Roy:
- I probably won't merge him. He's definitely worth merging; uses the stats really well and 4* merge can't use the superboon, but I want more dual phase out of my first +10s and he's too slow. Plus Eirika can play like a 181BST unit under the right conditions.
- I like him as a mixed tank, especially with that def superboon.
- I want his atk intact to avoid losing vs dragons and armours with their high def
- I want his spd intact because he's right in the range of a lot of dragons and taking one less hit is nice.
- Therefore, I definitely drop HP. So +def -HP unless merging and using atk ploy, in which case maybe +res -HP. But I'll probably just get a teammate to ploy for him.
- I definitely prefer guard as the B-skill of choice. He combos guard and QR more elegantly than everyone except B.Ephraim, who's simply broken, possibly beyond repair, and B.Hector. So I want him winning against bold fighters.
- C-skill isn't clear to me. Threaten atk I could actually consider, otherwise it's probably something like hone spd or conceivably even some wave, like...res wave? Def wave?
- I might not have the close def seal to give him. Lots of units want it.
- Not sure what to do about L.Tiki, especially if she uses a 2-or 3-charge special, or 4 with special fighter. She's a monster and troublesome without slaying hammer, M.Grima+atk, some green mage, or a melee green with really high res. But the matchup is extremely close with a single close def, and I'm pretty sure we can't lose with double CD.
- DC is reasonable, but when he's one of my go-to's vs bold fighters and dragons, I'd prefer extra stats

I agree with this mostly. it's the ivs I run. I choose that seal for him because I use him for dragons and melee non-blue units for the most part. His B skill I'd add in CA3 to counter Nowi TA if you want him only to check dragons. C skill is mostly supporting, Attack Smoke is what I run if no team is in mind. But yeah there are tons of different builds for him. DC Wrath DD3, WB Guard CD, SB Guard CD. The best skill I find for my type of Roy is WB because arena if filled with dragons and feirce breath isnt needed as he has more trouble surviving than he does killing them. and he already gets up to 45 with the def wave I run with him. Put him on a defense tile and it's game.

So specifically for the A slot I go to breath skill every time and here is my explanation.

Fortress is written off every time. He has absolutely no player phase potential with this weapon and it should probably be written off unless you want to dedidcate to it for an unconventional build. CD does the same thing without sacrificing 4+ damage on the opponent.

CD is definitely better, but I still don't use it because ending combat faster and healing more with your special I find more important. In arena he won't stop all damage so I think that running something that speeds up your cooldown instead of just stats gives him more. Even with supporting his defenses I find he'd rather go for more special charges. Especially with all those defense tiles in arena

For special Ignis over bonfire if I choose a damage special, but I prefer Aether. Aether heals him up back to his QR percent which is where he'll get most of his damage from.

Yeah def tiles really make a huge difference, and agreed that his player phase is not intimidating and not the focus of his weapon. I don't think fortress is necessarily that bad though, especially in relay def or sometimes just PvE more generally. He gets hit by some random mage; he still wins when the melee opponent comes.

Here again I learn something, the interaction between solid passivity and aggression. QR and breath skill are both aggressive choices, so the breath skill makes a lot of sense given QR. Aether is a defensive skill because it heals instead of hitting harder like ignis, but its most important role is actually driving his offense, which comes from QR.

Do you even win against a good bold fighter Zelgius with ignis, or is it a draw and you're screwed because he's going to attack again and he'll finally get black luna in?

Lol I used that whenever I could in GC it was too funny. I have the fodder for it but idk if it'd be wasteful because he already has a good set

Now that I'm planning to get Kliff on the main team I would use him to deal with Zelgius, but he technically does win the MU. He needs be on a defensive tile for a few sword lords with my build but nothing that isn't managable. and he is my S support so that really swings MUs in his favor.
