Best use of distant counter
So today on Ninian's banner I managed to pull a second Hector. I don't want to merge them, but I don't know who to give distant counter to. I have a +res -def Brave Ike, but I don't really want a second green unit to have distant counter. Does anyone have any suggestions on units who use it really well in high arena teirs? Like anyone think it'll go well on a unit in the long run, even as the meta changes? Thanks

Brave Ike is the worst person to give Distant Counter to ever as it ruins the whole point of his axe and negates his magic survivabikity entirely. He's best off just holding his base kit really with an assist of choice.
As for distant counter, my default answer is always Zephiel with Bonfire as he is absolutely amazing and can even tank any non Reinhardt blue mage thanks to his HP and wary fighter in effect. He makes a great bait and walk unit for just about anything and he has a free threaten defense 2 effect. Not to mention he has the absolutely highest HP pool and thus the best user of Panic Ploy in the game.

Actually, it's quite powerful when ran with the right set.
With QP!Bonfire (or Aether if you only need him to deal with blue mages), DC, Vantage, and Panic Ploy, Brave Ike can actually tank every mage, including certain variations of non-TA red mages and kill them back on the retaliation due to Bonfire and his potential 55 attack. And now with Vantage, assuming he still has enough health left after his first engagement, he can abuse Urvan and nulify the second attack of anything that survives his first hit and doubles him.
Now, I personally prefer his default set as it gives a lot of Arena weighting and is extremely powerful, but I definitely wouldn't disregard his DC set since it's very strong.

I know, about 60 SP more. It's just that running DC with his default set is quite awkward in my opinion. But since it's Greil, anything can go I suppose.
With Close/Distant Counter, both Brave Ike and Brave Lyn are actually the first units that can just break the 2000 base SP mark, which is honestly quite insane.

That is quite insane. Plus, they both have legendary weapons, so they weigh quite heavily in the arena. Brave Ike's DC build is very similar to my Eldigan's DC build that I posted a while back. With quicken pulse, killer weapon, and Bonfire (for high def units), you check all mages that cannot one-shot you, which is absurdly powerful. Black Knight can do it as well: built-in DC allows him to run Steady Breath as A-slot, and when together with quicken pulse and Black Luna, can produce absurd effects such as one-shotting blue units that even have decent bulk...

Honestly, I can't wait for Black Knight, it sucks I don't have a fodder for Steady Breath or even a single copy of Wrath yet because they would instantly go to Black Knight when he drops. With all the new additions to Armoured units, he'll be such an oppressive unit.
I actually wish I'd gotten an Eldigan as well. I think having a special cooldown reduction is better than whatever A-Slot Xander can get right now, and on top of that, he actually gets IVs. Unfortunately, I feel he's slightly underrated due to the availability of the two.

omg, you must be my soulmate... this is exactly how I felt. I wrote a post before and argued that Eldigan had a higher ceiling than Xander. and now Eldigan and Brave Roy are my go-to red swords (one for arena offense, and the other for arena defense). My Ryoma and Ike have been taking a vacation...

You know it's awkward, because of how similar your names are at a glance, I thought I was talking with Ryu this whole time hahaha..
But, uh, anyways lol, I think we are often of one mind.
Also, don't worry, your Ryoma and Ike are both rocking it over here on their Vaca. I happen have the exact opposite situation to you, I benched my Xander (no seth, no Roy, no Eldigan, c'mon IS) for Ike and Ryoma due to their higher Arena weighting.

Effie is the best DC option for armor at the moment due to her color and stat-line. Between wary fighter and the highest attack in the game I think she's going to maintain relevance in the meta. She can also inherit Hector's other exclusive skill - Goad Armor - while she's at it which is a big point in her favor.
Outside of armor emblem... DC is transformative to a few niche units like Anna, Titania, and Caeda...but you want units that can resist changes in the meta so...
I'd say any high attack unit with access to a legendary weapon. Having access to movement type buffs would be a major plus. Chrom, Alfonse, Lucina/Martha, Tana, Alm, and so on.
Something to keep in mind is that you can inherit DC to a disposable unit to try it out...and then if it's not working inherit it to someone else.

You can get by without Armor March but it's much more challenging. It essentially requires a hybrid team or running Distant Counter on multiple armors - which was more effective before B!Lyn. If you have Tana, a hybrid team of three armors and a flyer with Guidance is perhaps even stronger than Armor March.

Without armor march, you definitely need DC on your armor units, otherwise, mage units can chip them to death while repositioning themselves to safety after the attack.
This is precisely why armor march was revolutionary for armor emblem - it allows armor units to run alternative skills for their a-slots, which were previously reserved for DC. For example, Brave Lance Effie can have Deathblow in her a-slot, which adds 12 damage when she initiates combat.
In other words, it is up to you if you want armor march. If you don't, then DC is kinda a must-have. If you do, you have more flexibility and probably have deathless runs much easier.

Can you explain your reasoning as to why Effie's color makes her a good candidate for distant counter? It seems to me that her advantage would be to counter red mages, which are the least threatening in the meta right now. Although, I can understand how it might be better than Red, who are weak to blue, I think red and blue trade about even.
Red is strong against green (Nino, Julia, Sonya, Cecilia), but weak to blue (Rein, Linde, Delthea, Olwen).
Blue is strong against red (Tharja, Katarina, Celica, Lilina), but weak to green.
I think most people would say green is the best color for mage tanks (and thus, lending to D.C. builds) because they're strong or neutral against most meta mage threats. Of course, that isn't what the OP wanted... (another green armor to inherit Hector onto.)

In armor emblem, I believe that it is best to have one Distant Counter user of each color. For the reasons that you outlined Green is the most valuable color for Distant Counter but I would prioritize Red/Blue over a second Green. Red mages are uncommon in the current meta but not unheard of – I’ve had a few deathless arena runs ruined by the rare Celica. Since the Black Knight will have DC on his weapon, there is no reason to put DC on a Red so Effie takes priority in my opinion.
Beyond that… Due to her impressive HP and ATK, Effie running Wary Fighter can survive the vast majority of mages (even Greens) to either OHKO them with Distant Counter or to weaken with Distant Counter before finishing them off the next turn. The only mages she really fears are Triangle Adept Greens (most of whom still cannot OHKO her), highly buffed Blade tomes (the AI doesn’t take advantage of this), and an optimized Reinhardt (this is the troublesome one). Distant Counter also allows Effie to charge and deploy her Special more quickly - which enables her to destroy Greens that would otherwise check her.

Lord Berkut, Zephiel, Brave Ike, Roy, Brave Roy, Camilla, Effie, Sheena, Jagen, Eirika, Anna, Titania, Lloyd, Mathilda, Amelia, Caeda, and Clair.
Note that there are units in that category where Distant Counter is not their best option, but I'll leave that to you to decide.
