I have an unmerged +HP -def Sothe and I find that his speed is often just a couple ticks short of scoring a double, but it's tricky. The HP boon is surprisingly effective because I can tank a single hit (brave weapon counts as two) from pretty much anything, and he's really hard to double without QR/vengeful, but then glimmer (or I could switch to moonbow) should finish them before the second riposte. If I give up the bulk I'll have a hard time initiating on anything that can hit back unless I switch out L&D (in which case my speed goes down...don't want to give him swift sparrow unless I will merge him) or can somehow get desperation going.
I feel like I can KO most things in two hits (maybe sometimes short 1atk, but your merges should deal with that no problem), especially if the special activates, so I don't feel a need for more attack, but go with your experience on this one.
