In all honesty, being able to go +10 without needing to spent a massive amount of orbs really does make a difference.

And I disagree on their verdict of Karla wins. Bulk is great for Ayra, and Karla's weapon means you have to build for speed if you want to use it against other speed targets. Ayra doesn't have to.

IMO they've always had bad opinions. Elincia is in tier 2 on the flier list. I'm not surprised Karla wins in their world as well. (I mean at least it isn't gamepedia. For some reason H!Mia is better than Veronica over there)

Lon'qu just isn't as good. He has a role (red infantry Raven basically) that many, many others already have. However, he has too much HP and too much speed. His refine is really disappointing. Karla is a better pick in general.

Now, you mentioned merges. It takes about 7 merges on Lon'qu to be equivalent to base Karla in terms of combat (use the online battle simulator to check). There is no comparing these two units. Lon'qu's sole advantage is that he is budget.

If he's correct, that's not a whale argument. 150 orbs to get Karla is about half a month's orbs, whereas promoting 8 copies of Lon'qu would normally take 1.5-2 months. The question is whether he's right.

Karla with swift sparrow and prf:
+atk: 58(+7)/44
+spd: 55(+7)/48

Lon'qu with death blow 4 and prf+eff:
+atk: 61/44
+spd: 58/47

So with the same boon, Karla's simply 4 points of atk ahead of Lon'qu at equal merges. Lon'qu would need +10 to equal her damage output. But Lon'qu probably goes +atk while Karla goes +spd, in which case you're looking at similar damage except Karla is 4 spd faster and you sacrificed a 5* exclusive red so theoretically you could have just gotten yourself a Karla instead.

Or if Lon'qu goes swift sparrow and +atk -res, 57/48 and now you're 5 atk behind Karla +spd with equal merges.

Now if you want to argue that Karla probably comes without atk or spd boon because she's 5* exclusive, then maybe you have a case. But I think it's not absurd to expect a good boon on her at some point or other because pulling multiple copies for wrath or possibly spd wave fodder, even.
