Askr Trio and Tier 21

So after the weapon refines for Askr Trio and introduction of tier 21, I’ve heard some people say along the lines of “See? I told you so. They’re relevant now, and you should be sad that you didn’t build them.”
I’m just a bit confused. If tier 21 is harder to stay in than tier 20, why is one unit with a weapon refine, no merges, and average BST viable? Wouldn’t you need a merged bonus unit to stay/get into tier 21?
I would appreciate it if any of you would explain it to me. Thanks!

As of the next update, you'll gain an additional +3 Arena Score per kill with each week's bonus hero. The Askr trio (and Fjorm) are permanently rotating in the bonus hero pool each arena season.

Alfonse->Sharena->Anna->Fjorm->Repeat

It's currently Fjorm. In two weeks, it will be Alfonse. As we can't predict what heroes will be bonuses for a particular arena season and, for most players, it's unrealistic to pull on every new banner, the safest way to ensure you have a bonus unit is to promote and build the Askr trio and Fjorm (who you should be building anyway).

You'll essentially have 3 core units of your choice (who are basically now cheerleaders) all supporting the season's bonus unit who is to get every kill every match for any given season.

But most players won’t make it to tier 21. And the +3 thing won’t make too big of a difference (at least, I think) in the highest corner of arena, where you can bet that most, of not everyone, will work their butts off trying to secure the kills with the bonus unit.

The issue with this is that while a single +3 isnt too big of a deal, the total bonus you would get from killing all 20 units you will face in your 5 arena battles is +60 points.

Gaining an additional +60 with an Askr unit is more reliable (and massively cheaper) than having a 5*+10 bonus hero each week.

For example; If your core is Draug/Sheena/Gwendolyn (F2P units), with optimized scoring skills+IVs, and with your bonus unit being an Askr unit that defeats all enemies, you will reach tier 21.

Most likely, you'll need to consider Legendary Heroes and Blessings, however I'd wager that for now you'd still reach Tier 21 with the above composition.

And completely irrelevant; Dueling Crests are limited. Even whales don't have an infinite supply. This has nothing to do with your question or has anything to do with Tier 21.

I thought that you could use orbs though to refill arena blades...
And when I said whales, I’m talking about the part that are in the top percentages of tier 20, who are sure to be in tier 21, probably optimizing their runs, and getting higher score with a merged bonus unit. Subsequently, that’ll reduce the chance of an F2P making it.

Its a team effort. A team with Alphonse and suboptimal skills can hit a 738 score as a max. Replace suboptimal skills with optimal scoring skills and getting 740+ is easy.

If you can +10 a seasonal (particularly one that has never appeared in a legendary banner yet) and 5* exclusive I’d say that you’re a whale. And if you’re a whale, wouldn’t you be able to roll for the other bonus units and merge them, getting a higher score?

Being able to do something once means nothing. last summer I spent $600 and only got 1 summer corrin out of it. When bridal sanaki came around, you know how much it took? Just under $300. I got lucky, ONCE. Whales will never have a problem with arena score, but i'm no whale.
