So I've been seeing a lot of (justified) hatred towards Canas, or rather his stat spread and lack of a unique tome. And while I do understand the disappointment, this is a post to let people know that he's not completely useless. :D
This is a build that I started making in the FEH unit builder (duh, he's not out yet)

With this set, he's at 38/43/34/21/33.
When near 1 ally (thus triggering Atk/Spd Bond 3 and part 1 of Rauðrowl's effect, his stats are then 38/50/41/23/35. This, combined with the possibility of the unit he's next to having something like Drive Spd 2 (which is available on a 4* Tailtiu), then he'd have 44 speed.
Of course, this is if my math isn't as bad as I think it is. xD
I was having a bit of difficulty deciding on the B slot. I chose Wings of Mercy so that he can teleport to a melee unit that's close to death, and then blast the enemy while benefiting from the extra stats on said teleport. Probably not the most optimal decision for his B slot...
Anyway, I know that this doesn't excuse the fact that Intelligent Systems gave this poor man a stat spread that's not really 'great' by any means, but, again, this is just a post to show people that while he's not game-changing, he can still do some work. ;)
That's one thing I like about this game. If you put your mind to it you can manage to make pretty much anything into a pretty good unit, even the ones that are mostly forgotten nowadays.(Matthew, Sully, Virion, etc.) Might take a lot of work, some team composition and some shenanigans, but looking at a completed build that can match up with the more meta units from a low tier unit is pretty rewarding.
Yeah, it's definitely satisfying to turn a unit that's seen by most of the community as "fodder" or "not good" and turn it into a really good unit that can hold their own. I actually saw a +10 Matthew in Arena Assault with Lethal Carrot, Ignis, Close Counter, Chill Speed, and Distant Defense. It was so unexpected, but so cool to see.

Absolutely. Some people are just too narrow-minded and stuck in their ego. Like, "oh X can only do this because you gave them X amount of support and resources". No shit? It's called strategy. Last I recalled, that's how FE is played.
I know a dude who's team basically revolves around Matthew, but their effects just about synergise perfectly.
I mean, hey, I built my main team around speeding up Genny.
With SS and at +10 (only at +9 r/n) she hits 40 speed. With Speed Tactic on Grima, partner support and Chill Speed from Olivia, and the earth blessing and Lady Grima, she hits 58 speed, doubling anyone 53 speed and under, and enemies need 63 speed to double her. And it's pretty easy to pull off, too.
I get where people are coming from, though, since that set up right there requires L!Lyn and Fallen Celica as fodder, as well as a legendary hero, summoner support, 11 copies of Genny, and it seriously sacrifices arena scoring, even highly merged. (Yeah, I use them in arena and I manage T19.5 regularly.) While any unit can be used, to make them really good they require a bunch of inheritance and dedication, while the more 'meta' units usually just require slapping on a missing skill or special, and often something easy to find like L&D or Fury.
And here's a pretty good theory build for Sully. Could swap DC for Fury if you wanna go for melee tanking.
Physically bulky? If my math wasn't wrong, then his defense was only 21 (23 when near 1 ally), so I wouldn't really say he's "physically bulky" unless you noticed something that I didn't.
And besides, most people use Arvis with Fury 3, Recover Ring, and 2 ploys to make him into the Ploy Boy, or at least that's how I usually see him. He's not really that fast, and while they both have supportive-ish roles, the way they support is kinda different.
But, I guess?
