+20 Damage to Specials?

I'm asking this question as someone who is completely inexperienced with Wrath.

I started thinking up some more builds that I can use for my Donnel so he's not always gonna be stuck with the same "Mixed Tank" build (Berkut's Lance + DC) and started thinking about Harmonic Lance and Wrath. I do not have Wrath yet, but was thinking more on the possibilities of what I could do if I ever got Wrath Fo.... I mean Nephenee or Karla.

But then I started thinking...

Is the +20 damage REALLY necessary?

I know watching big numbers fly across the screen is extremely satisfying (Ignis-bombing with Henry is still one of my favorite pastimes, lol), but I don't know if the +20 damage is really necessary...

Or maybe the +20 damage isn't the "main selling point" I should be looking at, but (W)rather the cooldown reduction, while the extra damage is just more of an added bonus?

For the people that do have experience with the Wo Dao/Harmonic Lance + Wrath combo, do you ever feel like the combination was actually necessary?

Sorry for my ignorance on the matter. (~˘▾˘)~

I yolo tried Harmonic lance + wrath on Neph right after shigure was demoted and it's really only worth it with a 2 turn special in a bait-kill situation, i.e. wrath reduces your special to 1 once it meets the hp threshold and then you reward your enemy with a 30+ dmg moonbow. As nice as that might sound, it's not really worth it over the trusty slaying lance + wrath combo which allows you to do the same thing with a more powerful special than moonbow (namely bonfire for Neph) and I imagine that a tanky dude-bro like Donnel will be in a similar position. The cooldown bonus is pretty much the selling point.

You're welcome. I mean, it could work with a higher CD special for devastating kills and the Henry-like special triggers, but I find the +10 dmg procs much more valuable with constant triggers, which is why even something like slaying lance + wrath + moonbow works so well, because you can wrath trigger your special twice ( if you double) in one player phase encounter, which will pretty much kill everything and you don't have to wait for more charges on a more demanding special (like Ignis or sth).

Honestly i think Wrath sets are for units with low Atk. It really doesn't look that scary, I hope not, and also you can't go wrong with mixed tank, with high Hp he can take in magical damage. Truly, it probably will get boring to see Berkuts Lance+ Dc all the time.

Why don't you try Firesweep LnD Combo? Slaying Lance Wrath? Carrot Lance Fury? Quad Brave Lance? Slaying Lance Wb/SB?

Report

Well, I unfortunately don't have a Carrot Lance to fodder, lol.

I was also looking into making a quad build for him. I'm not completely done with the drawing board, I'm just trying to look at this from multiple angles to really see what I want to do with him. I do have a Brave Ike that I'm not really using, so I can try a Steady Breath build if I so choose.

Thank you for your input. :)

Your welcome, I hope I helped. I have a set for Donnel consisting of SB and Wrath:

Slaying Lance+ Refine Def/Res
Reposition
Bonfire/Aether/Ignis
SB
Wrath
Atk Smoke
Close Def/QR

Desperation with Brash Assault Seal and Brave Lance+ would be terrifying. A Slot could boast Heavy Blade or maybe something more defensive like Brazen Atk/Def. Galeforce would probably be my Special of choice, but you can make anything work, really.

+20 has some interesting implications, such as granting more health for use of things like Sol and Aether, as well as allowing a unit to finish off an enemy that has weapon advantage. They're more situational, sure, but if the unit preforms well anyway, I find that rare but crucial use far more appealing.

Report

Yeah, Aether was one skill I started considering from a previous question that was asked a few days ago, and it's always interesting to see posts on units completely nuke the enemy with Triangle Advantage on them.

Well, I plan to make a Lukas build using Harmonic Lance+, Steady Breath, Wrath and the QR seal. (Just got my fist Shigure to fodder to him, too!) He'll be able to proc Ignis on his second hit every fight, which will allow me to bait super-heavy Green units like Hector, Sheena and Beruka. It's pretty much just insurance to be able to take out the units I want to kill, when normal Ignis might not be good enough.

Report

Aw, I thought I had a Lukas with the build mentioned on my friend's list, but he has Quick Riposte, not Wrath, xD.

I can see him dealing a lot of damage with his insanely high defense stat. x_X'

At +10 and with Steady Breath he'd have (49 base +4 SB x .8 Ignis =) +42 damage from Ignis on his second hit. Add +20 to that and I'm pretty sure not much will be able to tank it. That would be +62 damage on top of his, what, 50+ base attack? Basically a green can opener at that point.
