Part 3: Example TA Cores

Part 3: Example TA Cores
Step by Step Example
Sophia, Azura, Fae

Let's go over a step-by-step process of building a TA Core.

1. Start with a unit that fulfills two traits of an "ideal TA unit".

Let's say we have an incredible flood of Sophia's obtained in our fruitless pursuit of Ike. Well, it turns out that Sophia is the premier user of Rauðrraven! Her high Attack, paired with Sophia's amazing defensive stats, make her practically guaranteed to win matchups against both Greens and Colorless units. She is both a Raventome user and a Bulky Defender. This covers half of the weapon triangle, so let's see what else we have to cover:

  • Red Melee
  • Red Tome
  • Blue Melee
  • Blue Tome

2. Choose a second unit that covers your first unit's weaknesses.

Sophia can't handle Blues at all, so let's choose a Green unit that can hold their own against as many Blues as possible. What about a tanky Green unit? Fae has decent Defense and excellent Resistance with innate Distant Counter due to Lightning Breath. Fae would prove an excellent counter to the Bluetome meta, easily ORKO'ing threats like Linde and Reinhardt while being able to stand toe-to-toe for extended periods of time against low Res Green Axes in a pinch. So what's left?

  • Red Melee
  • Red Tome

3. Choose a third unit that covers your second unit's weaknesses.

Azura stands out as being somewhat resilient against Red Tomes, while being able to ORKO almost every Red in the game if given Life and Death, or even just run Fury for more resilience against lighter enemy attacks. She would handily erase Red Swords away and OHKO red tomes. That covers all aspects of the Weapon Triangle. Plus, she even comes with Sapphire Lance so she isn’t difficult to SI. Finally, Azura gives our team a lot more flexibility with her ability to Singe. This will open up many options for plays.

4. Choose B Skills for your first unit that provide a second layer of protection against their own type, or secures their role as a hard counter to a particular counter.

This is where your TA core can truly start to shine, because it allows them even more flexibility to cover for each other's weaknesses. Let's look at Azura. Although Azura hits very hard, she can't do everything and you might need her to help out Fae. Sophia's slow speed makes her very susceptible to being picked off by Red Swords. Thus, we could give Sophia Swordbreaker and provide a second line of protection against Red Swords! This allows her to ORKO almost every Red Sword, as well as preventing them from doubling her.

5. Repeat Step 4 for your second unit.

Fae, despite her flexibility, is middling in speed... so let's make use of it with Quick Riposte! Since she'd be taking close to 0 damage from even Reinhardts, QR can stay active for multiple rounds of combat. This lets her be a perfect counter against any and every blue unit due to her Lightning Breath, and even lets her fight non-Julia Green tomes or some Green Axes in a pinch if necessary! The fantastic thing about Fae’s QR is that if she fights blue units that deal close to 0 damage, her HP may stay high enough to abuse QR again.

6. Repeat Step 5 for your third unit.

Red Swords are safely covered since both Sophia and Azura can ORKO them, while Blue units are universally slaughtered by Fae. Green units, particularly high Res ones like Anna or Titania, could be tricky to deal with, but Sophia and Fae should be able to handle them together (Azura can't do anything to them anyways). With that in mind, we choose to give Azura B Tomebreaker to secure ORKO's against characters like Linde and S!Lucina (or prevent their ORKO's from Lancebreaker).

7. Choose assist skills, and at least one Reposition.

Almost done; now we look at what assists we want to run. Obviously, Dancers should run Dance/Sing and Supports should run a Rally Skill. However, mobility is paramount to a TA core - they need to be able to support each other ASAP, and repositioning skills aid greatly with this. At the same time, there may be circumstances where a unit will take tremendous damage and you need emergency healing. We decide to give Fae Reciprocal Aid, since she has the highest HP pool and hand Sophia Reposition. Now we have two units that can alter movement range, and this should greatly help our fighting ability. The 4th unit we choose (external to the TA core) can utilize another movement ability to help the team out. Afraid of Reinhardt rushes? Be afraid no more; just throw Fae out into his large attack range, and watch him die on Turn 1.

8. Fill out your units with appropriate specials.

We equip Sophia with Draconic Aura to use her high Attack stat, Moonbow for Azura since it pairs well with her OHKO playstyle, and Glacies for Fae to abuse her high Res. Sophia can take the Atk+1 Seal to further secure her kills, Azura can equip HP+3 for additional bulkiness, and Fae takes Fortify Resistance 1 to help the other two take less chip damage.

9. Round them out with C Passives and Seals as desired.

We choose appropriate C Skills. Hone Attack and Hone Speed are standard, so we'll put them on Fae and Azura, respectively. Lastly, we'll put Fortify Defense on Sophia over Fortify Resistance to patch up Fae's average Defense. Azura can get HP+3 to help her tankiness, Sophia can carry Fortify Resistance to round out the buffs, and Fae can choose to run Quickened Pulse to get an almost guaranteed ORKO.

And we're done! This was just one example of building a TA core. You can find more examples (with less explanation) further down!

Other Example Cores
Mixed Unit Core
Eirika, Linde, Cecilia

Eirika:
Weapon: Sieglinde
Assist: Rally Defense
Special: Moonbow

  • Passive A: Triangle Adept 3
  • Passive B: Bowbreaker 3
  • Passive C: Hone Speed 3
  • Sacred Seal: Fortify Resistance

Linde
Weapon: Blárblade+
Assist: Reposition
Special: Moonbow

  • Passive A: Triangle Adept 3
  • Passive B: Lancebreaker 3

Assist: Swap
Special: Draconic Aura

  • Passive A: Triangle Adept 3
  • Passive B: G Tomebreaker 3
  • Passive C: Threaten Res 3
  • Sacred Seal: Atk +1

This team revolves around abusing Linde's skyhigh offensive stats. With Lancebreaker, Linde easily cleans out the field of Reds and Blue Lances, only slightly struggling against opposing Blue tomes. Eirika provides her her buffs while serving as an excellent counter to Green units. Cecilia serves as the premier Raventome user on this team, walling off Blues and Colorless units while using G Tomebreaker to fight against Julia and Nino as needed. Even though it appears that the team is fragile, Eirika's ability to buff defense by 4 greatly increases Cecilia's defense to solid levels and helps Linde wall off even Red units in a pinch.

Cavalry TA Core
Leo, Camus, Titania

    Leo
    Weapon: Rauðrraven+
    Assist: Draw Back
    Special: Moonbow

    • Passive A: Triangle Adept 3
    • Passive B: Quick Riposte 3
    • Passive C: Goad Cavalry
    • Sacred Seal: Atk +1

    Camus:
    Weapon: Gradivus
    Assist: Swap
    Special: Bonfire

    • Passive A: Triangle Adept 3
    • Passive B: Bowbreaker 3
    • Passive C: Hone Cavalry
    • Sacred Seal: Spd +1

    Titania:

    Assist: Reposition
    Special: Iceberg

    • Passive A: Distant Counter
    • Passive B: Quick Riposte 3
    • Passive C: Ward Cavalry
    • Sacred Seal: Fortify Res +1

This team seeks to abuse the buffs of a cavalry team. With Ward Cavalry + Fortify Resistance 1 from Titania, Leo is able to stand his ground against both Colorless Units and Green Tomes, easily ORKO'ing them with Quick Riposte. Camus boasts attack high enough to ORKO every Red Tome and his superb defense renders him immune to Red Swords. Bowbreaker is taken to serve as a to Cancel Affinity Archers, or simply to relieve Leo of pressure. Finally, Titania shines as the team's anchor against both Green and Blue tomes with her Distant Counter, easily dispatching both Reinhardt and Nino due to the rarity of Axebreaker. To top it off, every character in this group can easily duel and kill Kagero 1v1 and possesses incredible mobility to boot.

    Flier TA Core
    Flier TA Core

      Palla
      Weapon: Ruby Sword+
      Assist: Reposition
      Special: Moonbow

      • Passive A: Fury 3
      • Passive B: R Tomebreaker 3
      • Passive C: Goad Fliers
      • Sacred Seal: Atk +1

      Catria:
      Weapon: Killer Lance+
      Assist: Reciprocal Aid
      Special: Luna

      • Passive A: Triangle Adept 3
      • Passive B: Lancebreaker 3
      • Passive C: Ward Fliers
      • Sacred Seal: Spd +1

      Spring Camilla:
      Weapon: Gronnraven+
      Assist: Reposition
      Special: Moonbow

      • Passive A: Triangle Adept 3
      • Passive B: Vantage 3
      • Passive C: Hone Fliers
      • Sacred Seal: Fortify Res +1

This team seeks to abuse the buffs of a flier team. Palla is the go-to answer for any and all Greens; with the skill layout, she is able to OHKO most Merrics while ORKO'ing the fragile Red tomes. Catria provides excellent coverage against Reds and Blue Lances, and S!Camilla rounds out the team with an exceptional stat distribution. This team is still weak to bows overall, relying heavily on S!Camilla to protect them against Brave Bow users. Fortunately, S!Camilla boasts more than enough attack to OHKO most archers, but Reciprocal Aid is still taken to help struggling members of the team recover needed health.
