Key stats worth increasing through nature if possible.
Complementary stats that matter, but not to the point of picking them over key stats for nature increase.
Relatively worthless stat that can safely be decreased through nature.

Show Explanation/Analysis
  • Preferred Nature: N/A
  • Weapon: Eckesachs
  • Assist: Pivot
  • Special: Bonfire
  • A Slot: Distant Counter
  • B Slot: Wary Fighter 3
  • C Slot: Threaten Atk 3 / Armor Boost / Panic Ploy 3
  • Sacred Seal: Distant Defense 3 / Defense +3

The Eckesachs may not be able to counterattack at range on its own, but this set lets Zephiel re-obtain his ranged capabilities.

Distant Counter is the star of the show, allowing Zephiel to counterattack at any distance which means he can retaliate against mages and archers. With Wary Fighter preventing any follow-ups, Zephiel is capable of dealing with common ranged threats such as Nino and Julia and can put a massive dent in units such as Linde and Bridal Cordelia. The Distant Defence seal allows for Zephiel to handle ranged threats more easily with a boost to defense and resistance when attacked from a distance.

Eckesachs A Steady Breath

Pivot B Wary Fighter 3
Bonfire C Threaten Atk 3

Show Explanation/Analysis
  • Preferred Nature: N/A
  • Weapon: Eckesachs
  • Assist: Pivot
  • Special: Bonfire / Ignis
  • A Slot: Steady Breath / Atk Def 2 / Attack +3
  • B Slot: Wary Fighter 3
  • C Slot: Threaten Atk 3 / Armor Boost / Panic Ploy 3
  • Sacred Seal: Attack +3 / Panic Ploy 3

This set revolves around giving Zephiel a very good mix of offensive and defensive capabilities.

When equipped with Steady Breath, Zephiel not only receives a +4 boost to his defense when attacked, but also +1 to his special cooldown, granting him a solid mix of boosts which benefit both his offense and defense. When combined with Wary Fighter, Zephiel is also able to avoid double attacks from his opponents, thus helping with his very low speed. The Attack Defense +2 skill is also a solid option for the A slot which grants Zephiel with a boost to two of his most important stats while the simple Attack +3 skill is another viable option for a boost to offensive capabilities.

Mixed with Bonfire which is utilized very well by Zephiel thanks to his high defense and Threaten Attack 3 or a Armor Boost for his C slot, this Zephiel functions very well whether he’s on the attack or the defense.

Eckesachs A Steady Stance 3

Pivot B Wary Fighter 3
Bonfire C Threaten Atk 3
SP1,965SDefense +3

Show Explanation/Analysis
  • Preferred Nature: N/A
  • Weapon: Eckesachs
  • Assist: Pivot
  • Special: Bonfire
  • A Slot: Steady Stance 3 / Earth Boost 3 / Fortress Def 3
  • B Slot: Wary Fighter 3
  • C Slot: Threaten Atk 3 / Armor Boost / Panic Ploy 3
  • Sacred Seal: Defense +3 / Distant Defense 3

This set focuses on Zephiel’s tanking capabilities.

Steady Stance 3 grants Zephiel with a reliable and effective boost to defense, granting him 6 defense whenever he is attacked, taking him to a staggering 44 defense. Earth Boost is another potential option which Zephiel can use very well thanks to his massive HP pool. Fortress Def 3 is also an option which grants an always-active boost of 5 defense, but Zephiel’s attack will suffer because of it.

Combine any of these A slots with Wary Fighter and Threaten Attack and you have a Zephiel capable of very easily shrugging off physical attacks. The Defense +3 seal can be used for even more tanking capabilities or Distant Defense could also be used to increase his defenses against ranged attacks.

Introduction

Pros:

  • Extremely high HP
  • Very High Defense
  • Very good Attack with good personal weapon
  • Native Wary Fighter compensating for low speed
  • Cannot be affected by IVs

Cons:

  • Low resistance
  • Limited movement due to the armor class
  • Limited merging potential

Despite recent units giving him some strong competition as a red sword armor, the king of Bern himself is still capable of holding his own on the battlefield. Zephiel, available as a Grand Hero Battle unit, boasts strong defensive and good offensive capabilities, making him a formidable opponent to come across.

Zephiel has 55 HP and 38 defense, some of the highest for both of those stats in the game. This makes Zephiel a solid defensive wall, allowing him to take physical hits with relative ease. This is insinuated further by Wary Fighter, Zephiel’s native B slot skill which allows him to avoid double attacks which in turn compensates for his low speed and makes him very hard to ORKO. Zephiel certainly isn’t a slouch on the offensive side either, coming with a good 35 attack and the Eckesachs with puts his attack to 51 when equipped and comes with built-in Threaten Def 2, allowing Zephiel to reduce the enemies defense and allow for more damage dealt.

Zephiel does have his drawbacks, namely his low resistance. At 24, mages can put a considerable dent into Zephiel, though his Wary Fighter does allow him to survive most mage encounters due to preventing a double attack. His armored nature also limits his movement speed to a single space per turn, though this can be remedied with Armor March.

While Black Knight and Arden give Zephiel a massive run for his money, with Black Knight coming with much stronger offensive capabilities and in-built Distant Counter and Arden coming with better HP, Defense and the powerful follow-up ring skill, Zephiel is still a capable sword armor and can still perform very well with the right setup and teammates.

Strengths

Amazing HP stat

  • At 55 HP, Zephiel has the second-highest HP in the game with only Arden having more.
  • This allows Zephiel to make great use of any skill reliant on HP such as Panic Ploy and Wary Fighter.

Excellent Defense

  • At 38 defense, Zephiel has the third-highest defense in the game, being beaten by Arden and Draug.
  • Zephiel is capable of resisting physical attacks with ease thanks to this high defense stat.

Good attack and personal weapon

  • At 35 attack, Zephiel can hit very hard, reaching 51 attack with the Eckesachs.
  • The Eckesachs itself grants Threaten Defense 2, reducing the defense of enemies within 2 spaces of him by 4 at the start of each turn.

Native Wary Fighter

  • Wary Fighter prevents double attacks from both sides when its user is above 50% HP, compensating for Zephiel’s very poor speed.
  • Note that Wary Fighter does not stop Brave Weapons or the Swordbreaker skill.
Weaknesses

Low Resistance

  • At 24 resistance, Zephiel is very susceptible to magical attacks.
  • While most mages can’t 1RKO him thanks to Wary Fighter, many are capable of doing enough damage to break him out of Wary Fighter, making him much more vulnerable.
  • Reinhardt can ORKO Zephiel should he have an attack boon or some other form of attack boost such as Death Blow thanks to Dire Thunder.

Poor Movement

  • Being an armored unit, Zephiel is limited to moving a single space every turn.
  • Without Armor March or another method of transporting him, Zephiel has very low mobility which can make potentially make it tricky to get him into the position you want.
Team Options

Being an armored unit, Zephiel benefits heavily from being with other armored units:

  • Amelia and Halloween Henry both carry the extremely valuable Armor March skill as well as covering for Zephiel’s weakness to blue units.
  • Hector also covers for Zephiel’s blue weakness while also providing the Goad Armor skill, thus helping with Zephiel’s attacking capabilities.
  • Effie is an excellent lance armor unit which very strong offensive capabilities when equipped with a Brave Lance.

Outside of armor teams, Zephiel can benefit greatly from having allies which can deal with blue units, particularly Reinhardt. Mages such as Nino and Julia can both deal with Reinhardt and many other blues. Zephiel can also benefit from allies which can aid his movement, such as Tana with the Guidance skill.

Counters
  • Reinhardt: Reinhardt is Zephiel’s biggest threat, being one of only two units capable of a ORKO against Zephiel using only his base kit (Abel being the other), though this relies on an attack boon. Given how common Death Blow Reinhardt is, Zephiel will almost always be able to ORKO Zephiel, making him a huge threat.

  • Brave Weapons and Swordbreaker: Brave Weapons allow the user to double Zephiel, though quad attacks are prevented. Swordbreaker also allows any unit to break through Zephiel’s Wary Fighter. If the enemy has both a Brave Weapon and Swordbreaker, that unit will be able to quad attack Zephiel, so keep an eye out for these skills.
