Stahl can make use of many different boon/bane sets thanks to his versatile nature as a unit. However, he enjoys an Attack boon no matter what, making it is best overall choice. Speed and Defense boons give him benefits depending on the build, while his HP and Resistance not critical on any variant of Stahl. Check the builds section for specific information about which boon is appropriate for each of Stahl’s sets.
Boons
-
+ATK: Attack is appreciated on all of Stahl’s sets, but especially his Arena Specialist one. Stahl only has base 31 Attack which is low for an offensive unit, and since an Attack weapon refine only gives him +2, it is better to have an Attack boon and a refine on a different stat.
Neutral
-
SPD: Speed is a decent boon for Stahl on the Arena Specialist set. He gains four Speed from a boon, taking him from 26 - 30. However, it is a poor choice on his defensive builds.
-
DEF: Defense is a great boon for Stahl on his defensive sets. It makes him harder to kill and boosts the damage of his Bonfire and Ignis specials.
Banes
-
-HP: HP is not particularly useful on Stahl outside of it providing more physical defense. It’s his second best choice for a bane.
- -RES: Resistance is Stahl’s least useful stat. He is unfortunately crushed by mages due to his Speed, so Resistance means little to him.

Sacred Seal: Quickened Pulse / Attack +3
Stahl can make for an excellent Arena specialist due to his access to the Armorsmasher and Cavalry buffs. This build is designed to let Stahl annihilate many of the common threats in Arena Tier 19 and 20. With this set, Stahl can potentially dismantle an entire Armored team all by himself: by OHKO’ing the green unit outright, dueling the red unit with Swordbreaker, and finishing the blue unit with Dragon Fang.
Stahl’s already-excellent HP and Defense let him run Life and Death with little penalty, as he will still have 50 HP and 25 Defense with the stat reduction. Life and Death greatly boosts Stahl’s offenses, with Death Blow as a decent alternative. Stahl can only beat Ayra, Brave Ike, Ryoma, Fir and Berkut’s Lance Effie if he lets them initiate on him, making Life and Death superior to Death Blow. If Death Blow is selected, Stahl will need to boost his Speed through his weapon refine or boon if he wants to double Tiki(Young).
Even with heavy Speed investment, Stahl won’t be able to outspeed the fastest swords. Swordbreaker ensures he can fulfill that duty and also allows Stahl to save his special for a fresh unit. Dragon Fang is timed to be ready after Stahl KO’s an enemy sword-user, and has the power to OHKO every Armored unit in the game. He can switch out Quickened Pulse for Attack +3 if more upfront power is preferred.
In order to achieve maximum perfomance, Stahl will need to be run on a cavalry team. He should carry Hone Cavalry to reciprocate buffs to allied units. As for a support skill, Stahl comes with Swap naturally which serves him well as a frontline unit.

Sacred Seal: Quick Riposte / Close Def
This simple but effective set sees Stahl combat red and green foes with his natural weapon, the Ruby Sword. This build makes Stahl a suitable unit for modes such as Arena Assault where he can be used as a specialist anti-sword or anti-green unit. Aside from being cheap to build, the major advantage this set has over the offensive one is self-reliance: Stahl won’t need a Hone Cavalry buff to do his job.
Swordbreaker combined with the Ruby Sword is the core of this set, forcing good matchups for Stahl against two colors. Fury is a great budget skill choice, giving Stahl a much-appreciated boost to his Attack, Speed and Defense. Swordbreaker is a must for Stahl, as he will not be able to reliably take two hits from Swords. It lets him boast winning matchups against higher-tiered swords who opt for skills like Wrath.
Stahl deals incredible damage with Ignis, but if a shorter special is preferred, Bonfire performs well and hits hard off Stahl’s Defense. Quick Riposte is important to guarantee double attacks against faster green units such as Amelia. If this isn’t a priority, Stahl can instead go for Close Def to make him nearly impervious to physical damage.
Stahl works just fine by himself, making Threaten Def a great budget skill choice for him. Hone Cavalry is better if Stahl is to be used in a Cavalry team, but this set does not require support from Cavalry buffs. The choice between Swap and Reposition comes down to user preference, but Swap works great and is learned naturally.
Introduction
Stahl comes from Fire Emblem Awakening, and is a red sword-wielding Cavalry unit. He is typically known as a defensive unit thanks to his high Defense, but Stahl is more versatile than he appears. He can perform well with both offensive and defensive sets, depending on his boon/bane.
Stahl has a relatively unimpressive stat spread, but he does have decent levels of Attack and Defense. He can even boost his Speed with a +4 stat boon and Cavalry team buffs. With powerful units such as Eliwood, Sigurd, and Eldigan it can be easy to forget about Stahl as a unit due to his lack of a unique weapon.
However, Stahl makes up for the difference in his availability, versatility, and build cost. Not only is he far easier to merge, Stahl can work well with a number of different sets. He can be built to counter certain top tier threats or just as a specialist AA unit. None of these require significantly rare skills, making Stahl an attractive investment for players.
Strengths
Well-rounded statline.
Stahl’s statline showcases his Attack, Defense, and HP stats. While his Attack is on the low side at 31, he has access to Hone Cavalry to boost his offenses. On the tank sets, his Bonfire/Ignis specials deal deceptively high damage to opponents. He is surprisingly powerful despite his middling base Attack. Stahl can afford to sacrifice some survivability for offensive power if he chooses.
Versatile and Cheap to build.
Unlike many other red melee cavalry units, Stahl is easy to obtain and cheap to build. He can work well with a number of boons. None of his sets are particularly expensive, and all are effective. He is a great choice of unit for a 4*+10 build or even a 5*+10 if you’re a fan of Stahl.
Weaknesses
Low Speed and Resistance.
No matter how you slice it, Stahl’s low Speed and Resistance hold him back as a unit. He requires a decent amount of team support to make him fast, and must run skills such as Swordbreaker to close the gap. His low Resistance makes Stahl susceptible to Ploy skills and poor versus magical attackers such as mages and dragons.
Suffers heavy competition for his team-slot.
Unfortunately for Stahl, he has heavy competition in his slot. Eldigan, Xander, Sigurd, Siegbert, and Brave Roy all boast signature weapons with powerful effects. Even Eliwood who is just as common as Stahl, has access to the Blazing Durandal. They all perform better than Stahl, with some units like Eldigan being able to run a more effective mixed phase set.
Team Options
Counters
His low Speed and Resistance are what dictate his list of counters. Blue mages are on the top of the list, with their exceptional Speed making them able to double and KO Stahl. He must also beware of red mages and powerful ranged attackers. Stahl can punch through some blue units with his offensive set, but otherwise is walled by them.
-
Blue Mages: He especially fears ones who can come from long distances, such as Reinhardt and Olwen. Lute, Linde, Delthea, and Tailtiu have the Speed and power to obliterate Stahl.
-
Dragons: Low Resistance also means that Stahl takes heavy damage from dragons. Red dragons are not affected by Stahl’s Swordbreaker and blue ones threaten double attacks with type advantage. Nowi, Corrin-F, and Ninian are permanent problems for Stahl. Tiki (Adult) and Tiki(Young) are also counters, but Stahl can get around them under certain conditions.
- Staff-users: Nearly everything they do is bad news for Stahl. They can take him under his Swordbreaker HP threshold easily, and their healing makes it tougher for Stahl to defeat enemies he can’t OHKO. He also fears the Gravity and Panic staves, as they take away his movement and debuff him respectively. Elise, Priscilla, Clarine, Genny, Lucius, and Azama are commonly seen healers that threaten Stahl.

With Stahl's high hp and def along with distant and close defs he will be very tanky on the enemy phase. Shield pulse and escutcheon/sacred cowl further increase his bulk to great levels for def and good levels for res(which is the only thing he has above eldigan and Xander). He won't do much damage himself but he will be a solid wall for the arena. This should work on Calvary and non-calvary teams.

Stahl - Lord of the Health
Stahl has a lot of health. Mid as well take full advantage of his amazing health pool. This set idea is a more fun take on the traditional sets, and gives a different spin on it.
This relies all on his high HP stat, and is super flexible based on what your team needs from him. If you want him to be more damaging, bulkier, or speedy, you can swap different skills with others to fill that quota. Stahl can fill any gaps your team has.
-------------
Sacred Seal:
Speed +1/Defense +1/Attack +1 - All depends on what you want your Stahl to do.
Phantom Spd 1 - Just as a niche if you fight Alm.
HP +3/Squad Ace A 1 - To give his already high HP pool that much more. This isn't 100% recommended, as there are others that are much more useful.
-------------
Alternative IVs:
+Att -Res - If you want to run Fire Boost instead of Earth/Wind Boost.
+Def -Res - If you want to run Earth Boost instead of Fire Boost.
+Spd -Res - If you want to run Wind Boost instead of Fire Boost. Only really recommended if you have a Horse Emblem team he can support.
-------------
Alternative skills:
Ruby Sword +: This is of your team is weak to Hector or green units, or if it's all you can afford to give him.
Brave Sword +: This is if you choose to go with Fire Boost or Earth Boost, and just want to make him consistently double.
Slaying Edge +: This is if you want Stahl to tank hits, and strike back with Moonbow procs, or if you give him Luna/Ignis, depending on what you want his Special Skill to be.
Luna - If you don't equip the Wo Dao +, or if you really want to give Quickened Pulse to Stahl.
Reposition - This is for more offensive and defensive play styles.
Earth/Wind Boost - This is all depending on IVs, and what you want your Stahl to do.
Hone/Fortify Cavalry - If you're planning on using him in a Horse Emblem team.
-------------
Supporting Skills:
Hone/Fortify Skills (Mostly Cavalry) - Stalh REALLY appreciates the extra boosts to his stats, and to make him way stronger.
Def Ploy/Att Ploy - Makes Stahl bulkier, or stronger if you have a mage/archer with these skills.
-------------
Counters:
(Blue) Mages - They really give Stahl a tough time, especially if you do decide to give him a Ruby Sword +. Mages are his biggest weakness.
Very Bulky or Extremely Offensive Units - Ryoma and Lucina for example can tear through his defenses quickly, meanwhile units like Zephiel and Effie can kind of wall him out if you're not careful.
"Effective Against Cavalry" - Self explanatory.
-------------
Strengths:
Fills Roles Easily
Easy to Build
Cheap Unit to Build
Patches Weaknesses your Team Has
Weaknesses:
Eldigan Does Stahl's Job Better.
Mages, Especially Blue
Wall Breakers
Not Terribly Practical or Consistent.

Bonfire | C | Threaten Def 3 |
With this build, Stahl can become a pretty good Player Phase Unit, and can deal massive damage to any enemy he attacks with Bonfire. Not only will Sturdy Blow allow him to deal more damage when attacking, but he also receives more firepower that gets added on to the Bonfire proc. Swordbreaker lets him be able to survive against all the fast Sword Units such as Lucina, Marth, Ryoma, Athena...
This build works best on a +Attack/+Defense -Res IV Stahl.

Nino? Pfft slice and dice the child.
Hector? Each time you kill him will be a sweet reminder of how you sacked one into Stahl.
Titania? HAH Stupid pony lady.
Rein- Sssshhh we don't talk about him.
Basically he is Xander but with a bit of a twist being a Green tank. Anything Green will die simple as that.
